dustcollector
Hi everyone, I would like to purchase my 1st rep watch but am unsure if I should get http://www.yourtrustytime.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=30_189&products_id=4181 or http://www.yourtrustytime.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=31&products_id=148 Are these of good quality and close to the gen version? Thank you!
lfovco
For the price, they are actually not bad. They are not going to be too close to the Gen but it may not matter in that case as with some much more popular models. Note that both have synthetic sapphire glass that scratches easily unlike real sapphire glass in more expensive rep, so you would have to be extra carefull. Also the movement in the IWC is going to be more reliable then in the JLC rep. In the end all reps have flaws and are not truly accurate to Gen, even the ones you would pay $300 - $400+ range. For a starter, these are elegant watches but don't expect great, long lasting quality. If you like JLC you may want to look at this one - http://www.yourtrustytime.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=31&products_id=1573 It has sapphire glass and Swiss 2824-2 movement that once serviced it will last your for a very long time. in general none of the JLC reps are accurate to Gen's like some other brands and IWC has very few models that are, and those are in a different price range. gran
IWC0059A - Portugese VCJ Ed Handwind RG/LE Black Asia 6498 is a good choice and well worth the money

fischyyy
Neither, I would consider this one. It's a JL as well. http://www.yourtrustytime.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=31&products_id=8907 Not 1:1 but the movement is nicely decorated and the dial is reasonably realistic, good value for the money. If you want a really accurate rep, consider a sportier watch rep. You could also consider these two: VC Patrimony: good movement, nice rotor, quite thin. http://www.yourtrustytime.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=43&products_id=3206 A Lange: this watch was reviewed here recently, biggest problem is the "IWC" branding on the movement, otherwise quite nice http://www.yourtrustytime.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=18&products_id=6399
Adeodatus
Lange, definitely Lange. Or IWC. One of those two. But, pesonally I like the Lange design better. Check out the review here: Good catch, fischyyy

Interesting analysis, but I am not sure I agree. At this price point you will not get great attention to detail, but if a watch looks good on it's own I would not worry about that. If your concern is robustness if the watches, I see no reason that they should not be as good as any. It is true that mineral glass scratches slightly more easily than saphire, but that does not mean that it scratches easily. Conversely it is true that sapphire breaks more easily than mineral, but again that is a ver rare occurance. As to the quality of movements I would not precisely know what 21J is in the Jaeger. But they are not per definition bad quality by design. What makes the difference is the assembly. By design both are likely to be fine, but due to assembly both should reallybe serviced at some point. The biggest difference in terms of robustness is that the IWC is plated and the JLC is not. The combination of hand-wind and plate is gueranteed to make the plate wear off at some point. So in terms of robustness, the Jaeger is definitely the best option. mbjoer
Lange, definitely Lange. Hmmm. Only if it stays stuck on your wrist. The text on the back is so bad as to make it laughable. Lange movement made by IWC? In Switzerland?? By someone who cannot spell 33 in German???
Adeodatus
You're right, but at that price range you can't expect much of an accuracy. Frankly speaking I wouldn't hand an out of box rep to anyone anyway, even if it a higher end model. On the other hand I wouldn't hand a gen either
lfovco
Reading everyone posts above I must agree with the A.Lange recommendation http://www.yourtrustytime.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=18&products_id=6399
