That watch was designed by the same person that went on to start his own company after leaving Panerai.

This is the first watch his company produced... you can see the similarities...

Not patent, but trademark. Patents expire after 20 years. Trademarks and copyrights do not.

Something always bugged me about that. Designers and writers get extensive protection, but scientists and engineers do not. Must be about who has more lobbyists in DC.

Actually the price was not that bad considering a much less rare 203 already goes for that kind of money.
