Guest REPPIN Posted August 11, 2015 Report Posted August 11, 2015 Hey guys, I have a HR 6538 that I just picked up, its still in route, but I was wanting to put a plexi on there. I dont know if a gen Tropic 17 will fit, or a Tropic 19. But do you guys know what crystals will fit that case?
dbane883 Posted August 11, 2015 Report Posted August 11, 2015 neither will fit... the HR case is made for a glass crystal. but will require some mods and/or glue to have a plexi to fit properly.
cavi Posted August 11, 2015 Report Posted August 11, 2015 which one is the HR and what dealer has it?
Guest REPPIN Posted August 11, 2015 Report Posted August 11, 2015 Helenarouhttp://www.helenarou.com/6538-homage-connery-bond-sub-watch-with-eta-standard-2836-65382836.html neither will fit... the HR case is made for a glass crystal. but will require some mods and/or glue to have a plexi to fit properly. So, whats the case difference between glass and sapphire. There should still be a ring that it snaps down on and a crystal retaining ring right? It is the Glass crystal glued down too?
cavi Posted August 11, 2015 Report Posted August 11, 2015 Now I am confused, for basically the same price Josh has the rep with the correct dial, correct plexi glass, correct crown, and decent movement 2836. So why buy this HR for the same price?
Nanuq Posted August 11, 2015 Report Posted August 11, 2015 A glass/sapphire crystal presses into the case opening "neck" and there's a seal between it and the case. A plastic crystal fits over the protruding neck and then a ring slips over it to squeeze it onto the neck, to create the seal.

It is the Glass crystal glued down too?Sapphire is stronger.. but I was just saying a glass/sapphire crystal is usually held in place with a nylon gasket.. where the plexi is held in with a metal ring creating tension.. I semi took apart a HR once and the bezel and crystal retention system is nothing "gen-like"the case itself is much larger/wider than a gen 6538 case. To be fair to Helenarou, it was designed orignally to be a modern "homage" to the 6538 and not neccearily a replica of the original. But I think some have modified the crystal and/or the case to make a plexi fit.. but certainly not a genuine T17.. that would be silly to spend $450 on a gen T17 only to shave it down so it could fit on at $200 midcase.
Guest REPPIN Posted August 11, 2015 Report Posted August 11, 2015 Sorry I mis spoke. I know what the difference is between sapphire and plexiglass...I just wanted to know what the difference was MOUNTING it. But I understand now that it probably wouldnt fit. So my question is, has anyone ever tried to put a plexi crystal (of any size or model) on an HR 6538 case??? Im trying to make it look more authentic/vintage and of course sapphire wasnt used back then.
