Does anyone have a recomendation on some heavy bandwidth sites I can visit? Normally I'd do a developer's kit from Apple, because, like Microsoft, they use Akamai caching which gives you huge potential download speeds, and I grab a FreeBSD install ISO from the server that gives the best speed according to /usr/ports/sysutils/fastest_cvsup and maybe something from somewhere completely unrelated, like ... um google video? All throughout this, I'd use net_snmp and MRTG to monitor my bandwidth on my server/router. As long as I can sustain over 12Mbps, I'm happy. That's because they don't use their own servers. They use Akamai who host local caches in almost every ISP on the planet. slay Posted April 19, 2006 Report Share Posted April 19, 2006 i suppose you are a US resident? i always laughed my ass off, when i heared in those comercials "DSL, 2x faster than CABLE!!" or when ppl said "yes, we are on a cable connections, thats way faster than DSL" but i guess it's the fault of the commercials... lets clear some things up, DSL can be faster than Cable, but Cable can be faster than DSL! why? because your ISP sets the bandwith you can use. for example my DSL connection has 6mbit Downstream and 512kbit Upstream, while our Cable provider only offers up to 2mbit down and 512kbit up. but there are other cable providers who offer 6mbit downstream also. and there are DSL providers who only offer 1mbit DSL. even my DSL provider offers 1, 2, 3 and 6Mbit. end of this year, they told me, they have their new 50mbit DSL ready. cable companies told me they will have something similar available. so you cant really say "DSL is faster" or "Cable is faster" - it all depends on the plan you have with your ISP and as for heavy bandwith: fileporn.org Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The problem is genuinely filling 18Mbps (the real speed of my 24Mbps+ connection) is not easy. My DSLAM is local, the line is clean, etc., but I'm not the only person on the internet. DSL typically (In the united states) has lower available bandwidth but better latency. OTOH Cable can get slow if everyone in your neighborhood is downloading porn. In EU countries DSL can get to much higher speeds than available here I've got 30 mbps download, 5 mbps upload speed with FIOS (Verizon), runs me less than $100 a month. Rumor is that fios will be available by the end of the year with 100mbps to the home at a low cost. Unfortunately it costs verizon so much money to install all the fiber, and a lot of time putting it in the ground, they're only able to do <2 mill homes per year. My cable provider was sucking ass for about 4 months now (I was on the 5mb download) plan and switched over to DSL 10mb download plan.. I wanted some sites that measure bandwidth to see if I was in fact getting close to the advertised 10mb download speed. I had two sites myself, but just didn't know if anyone had other suggestion.... I'm on ADSL2+ in France. €30 a month for 24Mbps, 100 TV channels over DSL and IP Phone (free calls) ... oh, and a fixed IP with reverse DNS. slay Posted April 20, 2006 Report Share Posted April 20, 2006 thats pretty cheap... well its expensive considdering you can get 100mbit for less in japan anyways, DSL2.0 actualy just provides 12-16mbit, BUT (!!) its possible to get up to 25mbit out of DSL2.0 with some kind of update, dont know anything about the update and reliability though!
