Immediately my webroot spyware program detected a potentially harmful program attempting to load on my computer. I clicked on the block button and then did as webroot suggested and scanned the comptuer. When I checked the computer this morning, webroot had found a "behavioural" piece of malware that they rate at their highest risk level. Apparently going to the evil empire to check out their nefarious business practices comes with a new and potentially very dangerous risk. It is free (the basic edition), very reliable, and has a much smaller "memory footprint" than the "bloatware" antivirus programs such as Mcafee and Norton. They work fine but they consume more system resources and they cost money. I also use two anti-spyware programs. One is Spybot Search & Destroy and the other is Spyware blaster. On Spybot you should enable "teatimer" which will prevent ANY changes to your system registry without you authorizing it first. This happens when you install software or when someone tries to install software without your knowledge. With Spywareblaster you can easily disable all tracking cookies. These three programs together, along with Windows firewall enabled, are totally impenetrable. I use eMule without problem though I have to open dedicated TCP/ICP ports in my router for it to work really well. I am not familiar with Bittorrent so I can't say much except just try it. Pugwash Posted May 17, 2008 Report Share Posted May 17, 2008 I use AVG on the virtual machine (VMWare and Parallels with XP and Server 2003) I run on my Mac. It's an excellent budget choice. Yes this is because you have multiple computers and you need to re-direct the internet to each. I couldn't figure out my router so I purchased a separate internet connection for my other computer. PG is an IP blocker that helps protect you from being noticed by the RIAA and such. Then again, can you get sued for downloading in Canada? archibald Posted May 19, 2008 Report Share Posted May 19, 2008 I don't know jack about AV software so I just bought the 2 that had the average highest security ratings & lowest resources usage ratings from PCworld, cnet, etc.--Spyware Doctor and Kaspersky Labs AV. Both are working fine w/ vista and don't seem to mess w/ bittorrent at all. Lots of annoying popups from Kaspersky every time i started ANY program for about a week, but that seems to have abated after it figured out what applications I run. Over the 2 weeks or so I had them on my PC they seem to find and remove more bad stuff (they haven't been tested by anything really nasty, though) than my previous combo of Mcaffee and spy sweeper.
