Fidestro
AFAIK At the temp the coating is put on, masking tape won't help. You would end up with the whole thing coated, maybe crappily I might add.
freddy333
Well two things: (1) Apparently only the cyclops is coated on the gen, not the entire crystal. So it needs to be coated alone. (2) Glue (i.e. crystal cement) melts at the temps in the AR chamber. The risk is pretty low. Just talk to the PAM folks about how many times they've swapped around magnifiers. I guess my ignorance of AR application shows. I thought the AR material was brushed or sprayed onto the substrate. No?
HauteHippie
OK, I've looked at the gen GMT now... It's an exterior coat on the magnifier for sure. In my opinion, this looks a little odd with the crystal around it uncoated, but it definitely does eliminate the bad reflections you get with the large Rolex dome. As far as the AR goes, it is applied at 600-700 degrees F in a vacuum chamber via physical vapor deposition (PVD). The way to coat the magnifier is to remove it and reattach it, as lanikai is doing. rolexconfuse
so in other words i can't buy a bottle/spray of AR and just paint or brush it on?
HauteHippie
so in other words i can't buy a bottle/spray of AR and just paint or brush it on? Well, you're welcome to do as you please of course. But that won't look authentic and it won't last long.
