Don't know the story behind this particular dial but Rolex has made some weird gen "special order" watches. But most of these are expensive "aftermarket custom dials". Some companies offer them to people who want to ruin their original classic sports Rolexes.

Like all those ruby diamond dials for GMT and Sub for example... Ebay is full of them. Those are very difficult to resell, which doesn't surprise me at all.

Could be a 16550, it has that type of thicker font bezel and what looks to be white gold surrounds and white hands.
