old skool
Any advice/suggestions on how to pull that off? I also probably need it on a bracelet. Is it even possible to assemble a sterile 40mm Panerai homage watch? If so, who do I talk to and what is the cost?
peepshow
Good luck. As the 40mm Luminors and 42mm Rads are discontinued, you'll have a tough time sourcing anything from a dealer. Your best bet will probably be the 2nd hand market.
OiRogers
At least one of the cartel dealers still has 42mm Rads and 40mm (auto) Luminors listed on his site... but that might not mean much, I've found that the dealer isn't the fastest in removing items that are no longer available. Sourcing a bracelet may be a bit of a challenge as well... I know they exist, but I'd guess them to be even rarer than the 40mm Luminors.

If you're talking about either Josh or Andrew, then those listings are stale. I'm not aware of any dealer that has access to any 40mm Luminors or 42mm Radiomirs today. If you can find one, a PAM 050 or 051 (40mm Lumimor with SS bracelet) would be the best for your GF. Those were really regarded as one of the very first super-reps. But they don't come on the second hand market frequently.
Dani
I had 2 braclets and a 168 whent to a member here. So its out their i em sure many has them..
peepshow
Careful, though, if you do find one. The 49/51 (white dial) suffers from an hour hand that is FAR too short. The 48/50 is scary accurate, however. A relume, better datewheel and better cyclops make this a 99%+ watch, IMO.

old skool
Just curious, as I don't know anything about these watches... I did a search for 40mm on iOffer and found a ton of watches for sale from $85 to $280. Descriptions from Japanese 7750 to asian 2836 to Swiss case, etc. How do I determine what is crap and what is decent? Is there any source for aftermarket parts for these watches? If case the crown and crown guard suck, or the crystal gets scratched, etc. What about sterile case backs? LegendofSpeed
Buying my wife a 1st run 050 was the smartest thing I have ever done... she went from not understanding my passion for different Panerai models (she felt they all look the same) and different straps to her appreciation of both... She laments that there are no really good chrono 40mm and she has an appt for her 050 to go up north for a re-lume...
peepshow
You'll be lucky to find a watch, let alone spare parts. I've never seen a sterile caseback for the 40mm Luminors.
sssurfer
I'll have to see what I can do. Inquiring does not harm. old skool
I am tempted to get one with a good case and send it to a friend in HK to have the case reproduced...that is if they are as rare as people claim... But it seems there are many available on iOffer.
sssurfer
Yes, the really really good 40mm reps like the 1st generation 048-049-050-051 are sold out now, and since a long time ago. Those who foresaw those were super PAM reps at the level of, e.g., PAM 027 and 028, got lucky. 2nd generations got sold out recently, even if they were not as good as 1st generation (main differences: the DW, and possibly the dial font). So I suppose that 90% of those offers are either fakes with 1st and 2nd generation pictures, or decent reps just not at the level of the old ones. Asking for real pics and details would not harm. If you select one, I can give you an opinion about it. On the other hand, power reserve 40mm were not produced a few years ago. Surely all them are powered with the ST 2530 movement, what alone makes them good watches, even if inaccurate as reps. As your GF was heading towards a homage watch, accuracy should be of no concern though.
old skool
What can you tell me about the power reserve movement?
sssurfer
Seagull ST-2530, aka TY-2530. 35 jewels, date @3, power reserve indicator @5, small seconds @9, quick date change pusher @8. 13 1/2 lignes (30.40mm) diameter x 7.40mm thickness. The ubiquitary movement found in all Chinese watches (including PAM reps) with PR @5. Precise, solid and reliable. Rumors are that it gets repped though (yes: reps of a Chinese movement), and the reps may be or may be not at the level of the genuine.
