RWG1: Let's get RWG1 back up

It is becoming increasingly clear that RWG1 is not coming back up.

It has been suggested several times that we make an effort to retrieve the database and start the forum back up. I am inclined to agree. There is a lot of historical interest on the site and I like its particular chaotic un-moderated style. I don't want to start a new forum. I want the old forum.

Demsey posted this recently over at RWS:

I have it from the source BTW, RWG is history despite the 'maintenance' message and unlike the Governator, "Eeet vill naaaaaht be baaaahck." Trust me on this. As a matter of fact, after January 4, '09 the homepage will be gone too.

I am hoping that if he can contact "the source" - either JB or Blade, and communicate our interest in recovering the database and restoring the site. I think it would be rather easy to transfer the account to another owner and I would be happy to organize a transfer either to my own name or to any other member who wants to take over that responsibility. I might also be willing to front the money to get new software up and running and perhaps greater bandwidth if that is what is necessary. I don't want to spend much of my own money on this but I have no doubt that enough members would be willing to help out that we could keep it afloat easily. How much can it cost? Greg, if you have any idea please chime in.

I would want the forum to stay the same - un-moderated and open to all ideas, intelligent, silly, immature, thoughtful, contentious, or otherwise.

Anyway, the big question now is, Demsey, can you help us contact JB or Blade, and of course, there needs to be some kind of consensus that enough people want to do this we also need to have some idea of what the minimum costs would be...

Probably the best way is to go for specialist forum hosting.

There are a variety of hosting companies who support IPB (which I'd suggest we stick with). The software itself is around $160 with yearly maintenance, but we can avoid that by going for a hosting plan that includes it.

Invision themselves provide hosting, and there are several other companies who specialise in forum hosting (which is going to be the way to go as a specialist company is more likely to have their IPB installation configured so as not to cause CPU overhead problems). Costs start fairly low from just a few bucks per month. We just need to make sure that we sign up with a host who will allow us to upgrade as the site grows. As and when we're ready to go, I'll do a little research and come back with a definite proposal. All we'll need then is a domain name (or to transfer the original, if Blade is agreeable) and we're in business.

I can organise all of the above without any problems, and am happy to do so as it's very straightforward. However, if Blade does allow us to move the old database over, I'm going to be struggling to find the time to do the transition as work and other commitments are taking an awful lot of my time at the moment. It's not just going to be as simple as copying the old db over - it's bound to need cleaning up and tweaking for full compatibility with the latest version of IPB.

I'd suggest that the first thing we do is try to get a definite response one way or the other from Blade. At that point we can decide how to approach this.

Cool.

I have found what I think is JB's contact info but am going to wait until I hear from Demsey. As Demsey knows these guys better than I do I would rather he contact them on our behalf, but if necessary I can try the number I have for him. He knows me well enough I don't think he would be upset by a call from me.

If Blade is willing to transfer the domain name that would be preferable I would think - to maintain continuity. Also, if the database transfer would take time, I myself would be willing to wait however long it takes. I don't know about others, but I could be very patient if I knew that we had control of the database and that we would get it up and running eventually. I am in no hurry, I would just like to know it will not be lost for all time. Otherwise, it is just another new forum, but un-moderated.

I am kind of sentimental I guess - hell, I would even prefer to keep the logo the same - and that recycle symbol would make more sense now that ever...

Yep, I agree.

I think Alphakazi has some database experience, so maybe he might be able to help with the transition. In the meantime I'll do a little research and try to find us an inexpensive host. As things stand, I don't think we'll be using a vast amount of bandwidth to begin with - we just need to make sure that we have room to grow for the future.

I agree with you about the logo and colours too - I'd be keen to make the place as much like home as possible :)

I doubt JB can help you,but type 'jean francois tennis canada' into google and you will find him,its not hard....look for the frenchman that beat up on Andre Aggasi not long ago.... :yuk:

Jean-Francois Mathieu beat Andre Agassi in a 14-and-under event. Agassi retired last year after earning more than $31 million on the ATP Tour. Mathieu earned less than $400 on the Tour, never played a match beyond the challenger level and the last time I looked, he was teaching tennis at Nuns' Island.

The Nuns' Island Tennis Club - featuring 20 courts - is one of the largest indoor tennis facilities in North America. Located in the upscale Nuns' Island neighbourhood - a small island community adjacent to downtown Montreal - this club caters equally to high profile members as well as to tennis buffs from all walks of life.

Luthier. Please do not post addresses/telephone numbers on a private forum. I would be [censored] off in the extreme if you published my details that way, and I'm sure the same will go for JB.

Kindly edit your post to remove the relevant personal info and think before you do something similar in the future...

This is Tennis Cub address/phone, anyone can find it on Google.

And I don't know, how to edit NOW. Teach me.

Everything I've ever read about it has said it would be easy. For others, that is. I wouldn't have the foggiest idea how to go about it. I'm for it, though. My shoulders are starting to sag a little, with all this hanging out in the loony bin.

Gosh, it's really cost just $160???

Half of good rep.

oh damn... no, you can't without being a supporting member. Edit privileges time out after a few minutes for non-supporting members... The only way for you to do it is to ask a mod to do it for you.

For future reference, however: whether you can find a person on Google or not, it is highly unwise to post someone's personal details to a public forum.

Originally it was free, but it's now commercial software. There are free alternatives, but if we're to re-use the existing database, then we want the same software - it's better than most of the open-source alternatives anyhow...

Well let's see if Demsey is willing to make contact with either JB or Blade (being the person they know best), and if not, I will try the number I have (which is different than the one posted before - it is a business phone I believe).

Thanks for taking the lead on this, John.

Greg, again - IT IS NOT PERSONAL INFORMATION, it is PUBLIC information.

But, anyway, thank you for help in editing.

I just thought somebody can find JB and ask for help in RWG1 things.

Yes, I think $160 is not a big money, I thought it's thousands.

I'm willing to pay for a year or more, no problem.

Just get our home back, PLEASE!!!

Yep,

The Time has come, JohnG said

To speak of finer things

Of data bases and ip traces

"We need a new home! " he sings.

And he's right. If it were coming baxk we would have heard from JB by now. Besides the walls here are geting a little closer every day. I agree first step is to find JB or Blade and beg for the domain and DB.

There's too much history in that DB for it to be lost. I don't think money will be a problem. If we all throw in a bit it won't take much. Tidying up the DB is gunna be the big one. All up to Dems now as he onviously knows more about WTF is going on than we do.

Un moderated, yes but it may be handy to actualy HAVE some moderaters this time round so there's somone to sweep up the pieces after a particualy big fight. And for those days where the front page is all viagra adds. A dozen at once is anoying after everyone has had their fun it would be good to be able to bin them.

Right behind you on this one John. The forum may well belong to Blade technicly but in fact it belongs to all of us. Especialy those who were there allmost from the start. Such people put a lot of effort into makeing one of the first rep watch forums the success it was and it is doing them a disservice by removing all their efforts from the face of the earth

That's the problem with the internet. Nothing is solid, it ain't paper and all it takes is for one person to throw one switch and you have lost years of accumulated experiance and wisdom. Admitedly in the case of RWG1 mixed in with a whole lot of unintelligible rubbish but, hey! It worked!

So.

It's time, men. Syncronise your Collaboration One's, chk your packs and webbing, lock and load and

MOVE OUT!

And the RWG1 re-establishment task force marches away in perfect formation to the tune of "Burning Bridges"

Col.

Oh for Heaven's sake leave Luthier alone. We all knew jf's personal info in '05, he's a celebrity in the genre, or wants to be. Christ, if Dave could suss out his P.O Box after five minutes on the 'net anybody who was of the inclination already did an in-house drive by. I made the Haj to his address in '07 Quebec. He wasn't home, so I pee'd in his milk bottle.

Stop thinking along the lines; you have to bring RWG's Ark across the Atlas. It's not going to happen. Just PM Greg, get a kitty up, we'll reimburse him for his time/expenditure to IBP and have our own RWS, save the 'Scam' bent and the toy watch bent and the fact Dave is banned and John is non gratuitus. If Greg gets a new Vach we will all congratulate him, if Dave gets a Z06 we will all go "wow", John and Onze can do the OKE thing (gay) I'll jump on Joeyb for wanting to string up Barak in '10, if anyone needs to know how to remove a bezel, we do what we always did on RWG; send them to rwgjr.

Coo? Coo.

I just got back from bringing my girls ( 9 & 11) to the Broadway show; "Rain, A Tribute to The Beatles". The musicianship was so spot on, the hair stood up on my arms. The audience must have been something, before "Something". Over.
