I was reading about reamer style drill bits, which are designed to increase the size of an existing hole and I decided to give one a try. They are not cheap ... about $10 plus shipping, but it was worth it. The bit cut a much cleaner hole very quickly. I bought mine here.

Nice, Marty! Great tip.

Did you use a press, or freehand? Was there no problem starting the hole with the blunt tip? (I like to drill the lug holes freehand, and I'd be just a little afraid of the bit wandering across my case...)

I cheat a little. I use a Dremel drill press. If you clamp everything down tight and take your time, it works fine. I don't think you can drill the holes freehand. You will end up enlarging the hole and will probably break off a bit in the process. If you want to have some real fun, just try getting a broken bit out of the hole :)

Doing it properly shouldn't be called "cheating". ;)
