DLC is similar in appearance to more conventional PVD. The color is often described as charcoal, or pencil-lead gray (as apposed to the deeper black of most rep PVD). I think that the pictures in this thread give a pretty good representation of the actual look of the bead-blasted and DLC'd parts. To answer your questions: I keep a small supply of "sacrificial" 0.9 and 1.2mm stems on hand, which are used to hold the crowns during the coating process. If a crown come in with a stem, I typically remove it, and replace it after coating. However, if the stem is too difficult to remove (or if I feel like I'm risking damage to the crown or stem), then I'll just leave it in, and coat it as well. There is really no downside to coating the stem...The DLC will not flake off, and it doesn't effect the physical tolerances. In fact, since DLC acts as a dry lubricant, it may actually be beneficial. I'm not sure if everyone knows this, but the modern PAM crown actually breaks down to 3 parts (plus a spring). The spring-loaded mechanism can be unscrewed from the head of the crown. When i tried to remove the stem from LOS's crown, the spring-loaded section began to separate...So I just tightened the parts back down, and coated everything.
