Daytona Cosmograph Repair

Been a keen follower of the repair stuff in here and decided to take on a project on my own given no one wants to work on Daytona 7750. as such I've stripped an asian 7750 down to the last screw. If I ever manage to get it back together I want to freeze the running seconds at 6. Can anyone advise how best to do this. Sorry to be pest. looked every where for some guidance notes. Found load of stuff that will help me put it back together.

No one seems to be interested in this one. I'll persevere for a while though......

I managed to get the asian 7750 stripped down and have put the Main Barrel, escape wheel, second wheel, third wheel and great wheel back, followed by the barrel and train wheel jewelled bridge. I added the keyless works and pallet lever followed by balance spring. My problem is that the second wheel and the escape wheel keep sticking, only every so often but it isn't a smooth rotation a low charge. when I add the pallet lever it just makes matters worse. Will work for 60 seconds or more then just sticks. It is like there is movement in the pivots for 2nd wheel, escape wheel and pallet lever. Is there any way this can be adjusted somehow. If I take the balance wheel out and move the pallet lever back ward and forwards it will fix it but then gets stuck again after running for a while.

any advice or assistance would be much appreciated

If I were you I'd PM Francisco.

He might be able to help... he and Zigmeister are among the only ones who have skills to take this movement apart and give some advice.

That's probably why you didn't receive any replies... average members simply can't do that kind of HC repairs. You must possess at least some kind of skills to even attempt it.

PS: Of course you have read the countless reviews of the seconds at '6 movement. You could find some info from those.

Improperly seated jewels = endshake issues.

Inconsistent shaft diameters and poor workmanship = even more endshake + wobble issues

Rough, broken and non-existent jewels = drag issues.

Asian 7750 seconds @ 6 means high likely-hood of all three issues...

Make sure the jewels are in good repair and properly seated, the shafts appear to fit well and aren't burred or bent, and don't oil anything in the extra 'adaptation' gear train (although thin graphite coating may help).

How were all the parts cleaned, & what types of oils did you use on which parts & how were they applied (how much & using what tool)?

I used Mobius D5 on crown wheel, ratchet wheel, and jewelled barrel and train wheel bridge (from the top of the bridge). I used an oiler and the super fine tip to oil these bits. I oiled other parts too, but they dont relate to this issue. (keyless works etc). I cleaned all the parts with cleaning solution followed by ultrasonic cleaner of all parts, then water, then dry with watch paper (lint free). I think the issue is wobble on the second wheel and escape wheel along with poor quality jewel in the incabloc and where the pallet lever sits. The pallet lever seems to be OK then it seems to slip and lock up the escape wheel. Can the gear train and or jewels be replaced. The issue with the sticking pallet level seems to be common on all Asian 7750 I have had a look at.

I was thinking of freezing the seconds at 6 if I ever get it reassembled (and find out how) but as the escape wheel isn't turning correctly now no point going any further.

No the movement worked for 4/5 months then stopped. Upon initial inspection the escape wheel was sticking although I thought is was not enough power to drive the wheel due to the seconds at six 'amendments'. The jewel for the pallet lever looks poor under a 15x loupe and isn't quite a through hole but nearly is! I can see that it's almost through, but it's definately not round and has an edge. I've tried to indicate the shape below although this is an exageration.

By-Tor... I Think you nailed it. I've been reading the Zigmeister and more recently Francisco articles for couple of years now which has given me confidence to at least attempt a repair of an 7750. I have worked on Dials, Datewheels, Bezel replacements, adjust time for a while and did get as far as a keyless works strip down but nothing like this. I have also been collecting as much information for reference as possible. Don't get me wrong if local watch repairers would help I woud quite happily pass the work over to them! Whenever they see a 7750 they just look scared and say more trouble than it's worth" and the trouble is with no one around who'll repair these movements and 4 x Asian 7750 with similar problems I decided I had no option but to attemp to give it a go. If I ever get it back in one piece and working them hopefully I will be in a position to help fellow RWG members especially in the UK as every 7750 I've looked at seems so suffer this problem.

A special thanks should go to Francisco and Rob for their excellent and I mean excellent articles. How do they take those close up pictures??? the one article probably that I'm mising is the specific instrauction of freezing the second at 6. So if anybody has any information for when I get to that stage of the rebuild. If not I'll attempt the Graphite (dry powder) lubricant method.

If the jewel is damaged, it will need to be replaced. As far as I know, the pallet jewels on the A7750 are the same as the ETA version, so you can replace them (jewels cannot generally be repaired). Try julesborel.com or cousinsuk.com. Be sure, however, that you do not oil the pallet pivots - these should be left (clean &) dry.

If not I'll attempt the Graphite (dry powder) lubricant method.

Remove the top plate that contains the redirection wheels & see if the movement runs. If it runs, then the graphite powder treatment should remedy the problem. But if it still does not run, then the problem lies elsewhere in the movement & will likely require a full service.

Update. Managed to find jewels at Cousins UK. One question I never thought about before. What Calibre if any is an Asian 7750. There are no identification marking on any of the plates. Plenty of branded parts available especially Valjoux 7750 but are these the same? Cousins have recommended a 911.09 (part no) jewel for lower pallet lever jewel (which is an Inca Branded Part) and I need another lower jewel for the great wheel too now.

When I source the correct jewels I guess I'll need to source a jewel press also. Can these be hired does anybody know? I have seen some advertised at $500 which is expensive unless doing this professionally!

I have the SwissL@b guide to 7750 which indcates part numbers etc for Swiss 7750. Does a Asian 7750 version of this type of parts guide exist does anyone know?

Many thanks for the pictures. I'm struggling to understand the implications of this although I'm sure some one can explain the post. My German (I think it's German!!!) is poor. Any explanation of the Pictures would be great.
