  2. Here are the progress pics Parts next to donor watch. I pulled the 1016 apart for the movement The 1016 dial and hands are available if anyone is looking for a nicely aged look. I think I’m gonna hold onto the ver 1 JMB CASE as I think I may want to build a pre explorer bubble back down the road. Waffle dial is on a Rolex plate so I had to snip the feet and use dial dots. Fit the dial to movement Fit hands These were a snug fit. The minute hand popped off twice. Never had that happen before. A bit of persuasion and I got them on Aged the lume on dial and hands. Hands are ever so slightly lighter but I’m cool with it. I really like these sub hands as they are uncommon from the typical Merc hand set. The seconds hand with the pip at the end looks great as it goes around the chapter ring. Dropped it into the case and buttoned it up and she’s done !! Ain’t she a beauty. [emoji7][emoji7] Love how the dial captures the light. Fit to a rivet bracelet and it’s done !!! A few minor adjustments needed. The dial is ever so slightly off center. And the hands aren’t lined up perfectly but I’ll make those adjustments later. Today I am just armoured with the watch The thicker bezel and domed crystal really give the feeling of an older piece and you can see the lineage of the bubble back in its appearance. Absolutely thrilled with how this build came together. Big thanks to JMB For the case set and to the forum. This community is a great resource for allowing us to get our hands on and enjoy incredibly rare time pieces such as this The 6350 Explorer is the first of line and being named so after the successful climb of Mt Everest. Rolex really designed and built a looker in this reference. The dial. The hands. Just a harmonious combination of design elements in a pure tool watch with great heritage. These pieces are incredibly rare as a small number were made. Because is that. In today’s market. The 6350., depending on condition will trade for 50-80 thousand USD. i know own one for a fraction of that price. I couldn’t be happier. Thanks for the read and as always. Questions and comments welcome. Cheers [emoji482]

  6. The dial in the eBay link has the numbers inset too far, just opposite of another common defect...the letters too far to the outside. The printing also appears to be pale. Compare the lettering to another dial they have for sale to see what I mean...eBay item number 263892047654 The quality/likeness of the pictures is unknown so there's also that to take into consideration. I will admit I am not too sharp on grading dials but I do have a few genuine 1016 dials for comparison. Plus $19.80 shipping is a bit stiff imho. Not impressed with the Ruby dials either although they may look better in hand, it may be the photography. In Ruby's defense, some of the dials on supposedly genuine 1016 watches look about the same: https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=rolex+1016+explorer&qpvt=rolex+1016+explorer&FORM=IGRE Assuming most of the dials in the images above are genuine, there are a lot of variations so maybe there is quite a bit of leeway in choosing a dial. The 'Stilty' dial on my JMB '1016' is not too hot comparing it to my nos examples but when comparing it to the images in the link above, it is not too bad. Something else about ordering aftmkt dials from Ruby, Yuki etc...the dial in the picture may not be exactly like the dial you get. The dial you get may be a little bit worse or it might be a lot better.

  7. J. You KNOW you're too much a valuable asset in this community to be let go anytime soon. You KNOW you're one of those persons we'd all feel glad and proud to be able to call a friend. You KNOW your cases and bezels are instrumental to any credible 1016 build. You KNOW that before your work the only option to a gen 1016 case was a gen 102xx or 101xx which would need (a lot of) reshaping. Therefore no! You can't go. Sorry not sorry.

  8. I'm not impressed with the three dials with the minute tracks- the 3/6/9s look too fat and the 3s stick out too much on the bottom. And like Horfan said, the 9 on #6 is funky. So that leaves J-4-1 by default. Or check ebay https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Rolex-1016-EXPLORER-Matte-Black-Refinished-Dial/263774448049?hash=item3d6a2ea9b1:g:EVQAAOSwtrJbLbkZ

  11. Updates! I’ve made a few small tweaks to the watch - slimmed the case, installed a Sellita SW330-1, and a Gen 6251 bracelet. I used an old, small Baleigh type industrial large to machine .7mm off the back of the case. This then necessitated re-cutting the gasket groove. Overall it was pretty successful. The chuck isn’t great and left some marks on the outside of the rehaute and the bit available bevels the gasket groove. Both aren’t major issues but I know they could be better. Also got a nick in the case when the chuck released the case mid-lathing. It’s under the case back but annoying nonetheless. Overall this brought the overall height down to 13.45mm. Not sure if the pictures do it justice but it wears much slimmer on the wrist now. Installing the movement was easy enough - got it with the higher hand height and used epoxy to space the dial and DWO. Overall I’m pleased with the watch. With the bracelet and all the rework, it wears like a vintage watch and pays a good homage to the original. Enjoy the updated pictures. Thanks!
