  1. I had finnaly caved in and bought one of those electronic diamond testers that can also tell sapphire from mineral crystal. Out of all my watches there were 2 (two) that had an actual sapphire crystal. One was the new GMT Master IIc and the other one an older day/date Rolex with a real ETA movement.

Everything else was false advertisement I guess. <_<

  2. Thanks for all your help and advice - I downloaded a trial of AZ paint and it worked different then what I thought. Instead of changing an avi file clip I had to save a series of jpg pictures. Then use the program to resize and animate it. Its easy though.

The first result is in my signature now, it was a Vietnam Huey that took us for a ride this weekend. Lot of fun! :prop:

  3. I used to have 2 gen Subs and the SMP gen automatic. Had to sell them some time ago and do not miss them at all, since I got them all as reps now and many more! Especially on the Sub I cannot see a difference between the rep and the gen.

The only gens I buy now are vintage, but they are somewhat like reps - always something to do on them. :D

  4. This does not sound good at all and you have not even seen the inside yet?

If this was from a reputable dealer then he should be able and happy to give you your money back, because I am sure Rolex would not like to hear that he sold you this watch. As you said Rolex would not have a watch with wrong spellings on it.

  5. There's a 5508 and a 6538, but no 5538!

Anyway, it should not click as chrgod says and should go either direction. You can pop the bezel off and play with the wire to tighten it up, as I recall. Some of them come with the little click pin and you can remove that and then it will turn either way.

The 16800 was the first sub to have the one way, counterclockwise turning bezel. Before that 1680, 1665, 5513, and earlier subs were bi-directional- no click.

Yes I missed it - its 6538 and its corrected- thanks!

  6. No clicks, and both ways rotation on vintage Submariners, or Sea-Dwellers.

that said, my Bond-Sub from Silix is one-way rotationable and does click... I can switch with you if want to click! :p

First THANK YOU for the straight answer! :D How hard was that? He could have cleared that up just like that too...

You must have one of his cheap ones with the CN movement, I have one of those too and it does click. :p

I think I have some kind of special perversion of watch addiction in terms of the 50's subs I have 5 of them already and I am playing with the thought to get a real good reproduction from ND trading with the real coin edge bezel and 1030 Rolex movement. My dream

  7. About 2 weeks ago I received a 6538 James Bond Sub with the 'Swiss' movement from Silix. It is a pretty good looking watch out of the box, just like on his pictures, but it does not have a bezel click whatsoever... The bezel just moves smoothly and very easy in both directions, so just touching it makes it move.

Now I don't know if that early Subs are not supposed to click or if there is something missing.

I have send several emails to Silix always with the same question phrased in differnt ways and he answered always with several days delay, but never got to the point, like he did not understand what I meant. He talked about inserts and this and that, but never said - no it does not need a click or yes it should have a click.

What is the deal - should it click or not? B)

  8. There are different degrees of Nickel allergy. I have that problem too and I stay away from the cheap reps as they seem to be made of a worse steel then the ones with 'Swiss' movements. I can even smell the iron on them after wearing it for a few hours. Now stainless steel does not smell. The only reason that stuff does not rust is that there is a lot of Nickel in it.

That said it surpises me that Gil has trouble with the new GMT II, which is not a cheap rep and I have one too and I think the steel is good. Maybe it was a bad batch? He should talk to where ever he bought it from.

That is a real agravating thing about reps in general - you can buy the cheapest fashion watch in the mall and you will get good steel, why do we still have to put up with that c r a p ??

Our dealers should be more aware of what they sell. It always says '316 steel, sapphire crystal' and then at least on the cheaper ones you get a glass crystal and #@% steel <_<

  9. The designer over at Omega needs to take the Submariner poster off the ceiling above his bed and stick with what he's got. It's fine the way it is.

Yes - if I want black I take the Submariner any time. But the original blue wave SMP is the best that Omega ever came out with and they should keep that design.

Don't care much for the newer coaxial's though, its a finicky movement and expensive to fix with no real upside to it.

  10. Man those pictures are crappy. How can you tell it is a fake with those pictures?

Yes - bad pictures, not conclusive IMHO, but on the last one you can see what looks like the stiff one-piece bracelet link of a rep. Not like the real bracelet that is made from many small pieces and the middle links are moving seperately. Maybe somebody is in for a bad surprise? <_<

Also - 2 feedbacks, years apart? I would not want to buy an expensive watch from them.

  11. Thanks for this thread Freddy - great idea!!

Got mine a week ago from Angus. Everything seems fine, keeps good time, water resistant, crystal straight. Beautiful watch.

The only problem is that the date does not click over perfectly. About every 2 days it is crooked in the date window and I have to manually adjust.

I never had this problem with any other watch, don't know how I feel about it in the long run..

Is there an easy fix besides sending it back?

Addition after reading the thread about the crooked crystal:

I went over the watch with a loupe and the crystal was indeed a little lopsided, I did not notice that before and had no water problems.

I had it corrected, but this should not come like this on a new watch.

    QC??? <_<

  12. I don't know 'Handbrake' never even heard of it. We use 'Virtualdub' for adding SRT subtitles to AVI files (hardsub). Its is a free download:

    http://www.virtualdub.org/index

To rip a DVD to AVI we use 'DVD-decrypter' first. (makes DVD into one huge VOB file that you can delete once everything is done - finished avi file...)

And then 'Auto Gordian Knot' (AGK) to make that Decrypter VOB file into a smaller Avi file either with or without subs. AKG lets you choose which quality your output file will have, Divx or XVID and if subs or not, it is like a batch program for the Virtualdub I mentioned earlier and it works like a charm.

All these programs come as free downloads and are easy to find by google.

These programs or the websites they are on have some good tutorials also. Have fun!

  13. You have missed some info out. What is your job and are you planning on working in the US? This will be the single most important factor in getting a visa.

Like I said: no jobby - no visa.

Or you could come in through Mexico, I heard you get all kinds of breaks if you do that! B)

No Visa fees, you don't have to get your fingerprints and picture taken for the big database and maybe even wellfare benefits...
