  1. Hard to beat a classic style...even new age classic....

This 5512/13 has been with me the longest and has benefited from every mod I can think of......except an original bracelet and Gen movement. What do you think of the lug shape and overall appearence of the case/bezel mods?

Opinions and criticism always welcomed and appreciated.

  2. Me too.

That Air King is a delightful beauty worth keeping.

Perhaps you should keep that Air King alive until you source all genuine parts for your 5513. OEM cases do pop up once in a while on eBay. Look, while you're at it, you might as well take the time to build the best possible franken that you can!

    JMHO

    Cheers :)

The Air King is nice, but is is a donor for the movement. Otherwise, I wouldn't give it a second thought unless it was passed down to me by a friend or family member.

I bought the dial thinking to simply install it in an MBW with a slow beat movement. Hell, I figure a fully modded MBW with all gen Rolex parts can reach $700-$800 dollars....why not spend another $700.00 and have a Gen dial and movement in the MBW.

Anyway, it's my party and I'll dance as silly as I want :yeah:

Thanks for the reply. I really do appreciate it.

  3. should be fun, remember to try to get gilt hands though. what movement is that 1520 or 1530?

i know what timezone said about this dial but im still sticking to it being redone in some way. ive got one almost the same somewhere but with SCOC text and its redone for sure. its pretty irrelevant though in the grand scheme and timezone is less factual and more opinions expressed as such too large a percentage of the time for me.

id personally tidy up the airking and keep it :)

Movement is 1530. I'll hold off my judgement on the dial until I have it in hand. Picture always tend to give a worse impression than the actual condition, so I am crossing my fingers. I will definately source gilt hands. Probably aftermarket but I'll age them to match.

    Thanks for the feedback.

  4. I thought the overlay went on top of the existing date disc no? So that would mean nobody would have a spare disc because it is still inside the watch, with the overlay attached on top of it?

    I may be wrong though.........

I tried that and had clearance issues with the underside of the dial.

Perhaps the promised "How To Install" tutorial will expose the secret that eludes me.

  5. Okay, I am a very handy person. I tore apart my first watch over 15 years ago, put it back together and it worked.

Since then, I have taken some courses, worked as an apprentice....kind of and have custom built many watches since.

But I have to be honest and would like to hear from others. I bought 5 overlays. I have since ruined 4 and quite honestly, I have no interest in trying to install the 5th. I tried trimming, using a bit of solvent (very very little), a wet paper towel and even installing one on top of the other.

The results........no good. Alignment is not the issue. The inner part of the vinyl overlay hangs up on the movement causing very slow and sometimes non-exisitent date changes.

So, I am now offering to buy anybody's rep overlay that they have removed to install the vintage ones(must be un-marred and usable).

I'll even throw in the one remaining un-used vintage overlay I have left.

Don't get me wrong, I have seen the pictures (although few) of other member's watches with the overlay installed and they look great. And I really commend the group that took on getting the things made. Perhaps this Mod just ain't in the cards for me.

Here is a pic of one that almost worked:

Please let me know if you have the MBW overlays that came with your watch. I can use as many as are offered.

    Thanks in advance,

    Kurt.

  6. Hiya Kurt-

Hmmmm... Interesting find... Though the gen vintage insert in my MBW bezel sits slightly recessed without mods already and snaps in- No glue or tape necessary... Perhaps this is for the non-MBW's only?

The only insert/bezel combo I've had to muck with was for the modern 16610's- Since the gen inserts are much deeper than the reps, those take some work to get them to sit right (height wise)...

Still- Very nice job as always! Keep up the great work :)

Thanks Ubi....My MBW inserts sit flush not recessed so it doesn't take much. The non-MBW's take more time.

Please PM me regarding Silver datewheels

    Thanks,

    Kurt.

  7. Very nice work, Kurt!

Which bezel are you starting with? I've often thought of doing similar to my TW. The issue with the TW bezel has more to do with it sloping upward which necessitates shaving the gen insert almost paper thin so it will lay flat. With the insert shaved ( another exercise in patience :) ) if fits fine. It would also improve the fit by working the lip so it's a tad deeper as you have done.

On the MBW vintage type bezel, the gen insert should snap right in so modding is not necassary. A nice polish is all this one needs.

The Clark superdome looks darn good!

The Picture of the 5512 is a watch I picked up here from a member for $125.00. I have made this mod to MBW's, Basic Subs with the retaining wire, the 16610 you see with the stamped double tab ring for the click function.

Even with the upward slope of the TW Bezel, you could take it down and recess the bezel lip so the amount of work to a gen insert would be minimal if non-existent.

Thanks for the compliments and yes, the Clark Superdome is worth every penny of the $60.00+ price.

  8. Ooh, good take. It pushes the inside up to the rim?

With my under-the-bezel CG mod (I doubt I invented it, as I know Kurt also does it) and Kurt's Bezel job, looks like new tricks abound!

Speaking of the "PugMod", here is the latest I am doing for a member just waiting on the Crown/Tube to complete:

  9. O.k., so we all want the reps to look Gen right? We have identified so many tells and give aways that regardless of the manufactured product, we can pretty much mod and fix most all of the inherent flaws.

But, I don't recall seeing this tell/giveaway addressed in this manner.

Take a good look at this picture:

    224265-13634.jpg

Note at the 30 minute marker of the insert and the recess. It is a time consuming, finger burning mod, but it eliminates another issue and the good news.....you don't have to modify the insert. Best of all, after this mod, the insert usually snaps in and is kept in place without any adhesive....just like the Gen.

A few more pics of my Ultimately modded non MBW Sub.

    Mods done:

Full case work to give the vintage look and feel

    Full CG mod

    Gen Crown/Tube

Gen style aftermarket 3 piece bezel assembly (Push down to turn just like the Gen)

    Gen gasket

Re-lumed dial and hands (still looking to perfect this area of my modding)

    A few more pics:

    Kurt.

  10. I've had one of Josh's beautiful SD reps for a year. LOVE it. But want to get a better bezel insert for it, the flat pearl has always bugged me. Anyone here got a better bezel insert? I'm happy to get a gen insert, looks like I can have Flavor Flav do the work.

I have a Gen Insert for Sapphire model. Sure, I got this one, but i can't get a Gen Vintage insert aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

    PM me....

  11. Realy nice no date Sub.! :thumbsupsmileyanim:

So still we have no winner....so :cc_detective: ROUND #3 FIGHT!!!!! :boxing:

    Actually,

We do have a winner or winners.

The first group of winners are the folks who "Care". They get to see some incredible work done by the members here. Not to mention the sharing of ideas and knowledge from the Masters (Me excluded)

    Second, to Pug.

Avitt was sort of right in his statement.

I must confess, the pics are of my Genuine Sub Date 16610. untouched by anyone since the day it was purchased.

I posted the Duel to point out the excellent work done by Pug and I think that has been proven.

Thanks to all that responded and again Nice job Pug!

  12. Like.....who cares.......yaaaaawn.......!

Probably the same people who care about all the "Reasons to Buy from TTK"....oh, and me....um.....oh yeah, Pug....and avitt......so, ooh almost forgot,.....elprimerozen and I would imagine everyone else who buys a rep to modify.

But really, that's probably all that care.

Just thought you deserved an answer.....glad I could help :thumbsupsmileyanim:

  13. I think if you put a little of the metal back on the left........kidding, I'm kidding.

Can you say perfection? I can.....................PERFECTION! Bravo!

Remember, even new from Rolex most watches ain't perfect. And a watch as old as this one represents certainly won't be. You would have to really try to find fault with the work you have done..........I gotta admit, sniff, it brings a tear to my eye......no, wait....that's just the smoke from my Cuban friend Mr. Ramon (shown earlier in my post that you had to upstage with the so called "Sub")

Anyway, I was glad to add what little help I could to see such a nice result.

Rare air Mr. Pug....Rare air indeed.

This message brought to you by and paid for by Mr. Pugwash ;)
