  1. I actually do not agree that phong is the best. he CAN be, but you have to remember that he is a dealer, not the person that produces the cases. so just like mq, its really hit or miss. you can get a great case on the first shot, or spend weeks going back and forth (like I did with my 5514) until he gets one from his supplier that is worth the money.

truth is, none of the aftermarket cases are just build and go. they all require work in order to achieve a good result. phongs as a base, in my experience, require the least amount of work. but there is alwayyyyyyys something.

  2. He states that the case uses a T19, so would assume the retaining ring and bezel are gen spec or at least gen-like...  You could ask him what size insert the bezel will accept (gen inserts are 36.55mm OD).

As far as the case goes, here is my brief list:

    • Lug profile is a bit off.. the taper from the mid section to the lug tip starts too early (this cannot be fixed)
    • insert is terrible, but that is to be expected (this can be replaced)
    • crown height is too low (not fixable without major surgery)
    • back of CG's are not very good and is angled incorrectly (potentially fixable)
    • mid section of case, at the base of the crown guards, is too thick.. the lugs are slightly fat... but the Yuki case suffers from the same thing. (fixable)
    • caseback appears to be way too tall/thick.. (not fixable)
    • the CG's looks a bit too pointy.. I think this is a result of the low crown position as the tips of the CG's should be colinear with the center of the crown. (not fixable)
    • Rehaut looks to be a touch too deep.. again, mostly likely a compensation of the lower crown height.. (not fixable)

On the bright side, it is 1/2 the cost of the Yuki case and it will accept a gen movement.  Bezel looks acceptable

    how do you really feel?

  3. Buffing wheels (usually made of compressed felt) are generally very uneven and the bumps will heat the metal at different rates.  At the microsopic level, there is some supercavitation going on and the uneven buffing wheel will create some gouging as some parts of the metal is heated more than others.  The contact patch of a spinning felt buffing wheel is actually very small..so if a small gouge develops, it will tend to get bigger, not smaller the more one applies the case to the buffing wheel.  Kinda like how moguls develop on a ski hill...As skiiers go around one small bump, and as the sun heats up the hill at different rates due to shadows, the moguls will get bigger and bigger.  The final buff of rouge should be relatively quick and prolonging the polishing makes it worse, not better if you want a mirror finish.

I think the principle of the lapping wheel/case holder is to distribute the pressure more evenly.  If the angle of the case is not maintained, there will be uneven pressure resulting in imperfect results.

Bite me J :).  Find a watch yet?

    low blow you bastard ;)

  4. RX1! That's a serious toy!$!$ If I wasn't wrapped up with other projects (), I might have one too.

Have a Fuji X100T on pre-order to replace my aging X100. I'm a fan of the optical viewfinder. If the Sony had a OVF, it'd be the perfect camera for me.

First rule of fight club, dont talk about fight club...

  5. Knowing the seller, who is quite a name in the Vintage Community, and after back and forths with a trusted friend on these cases, we've concluded that they are gen, but completely refurbished.

Including the model and serial engravings. The seller is big in the vintage world, and we both find it hard to believe he would advertise and sell aftermarket cases, especially saying they were gen.

I think the value of these cases have been pretty much halved due to the work done on them.
