  1. I've had a few free days at home to recover from this flu that just beat the crap out of me....so I figure I'd post some premature photos of a project I decided to embark upon....probably the most expensive one for me to date (hopefully the wife doesn't find out :black_eye:)........this means, I will probably be getting rid of some of the collection to cover costs for this project :(..........

I picked up this 1570(5) GMT movement off of Ebay at a good price......before I start the project, I'm thinking of taking to a proper local certified Rolex watch smith and get it completely overhauled?

There's this local place by my house that seems like a service center where other jewelry stores send their high end watches to get serviced.....it's probably expensive, but I would like to be sure it's done right.

What do you guys thinks?...and what's a decent price for overhaul, timing, regulating?

NOW for the fun......What should I drop this into? Phong caseset? Phong dial & hands.... or ...... RSC Service Dial & Hands (like Stilty)?...I do like a well lit dial? :g:

  2. Is this a Phong case set?

Also...how much does a service dial & hands cost?...assuming one could get a hold of a set? I know Rolex is redoing vintages and replacing all the old tritium dials with these new luminova service dials that only say "Swiss" on the bottom.....I'm kinda torn for my project whether to keep the vintage dial look......or......try and source a new service dial/hands...I do like a well lit dial! :g:

  3. I just received my 1680 from Angus today.. ripped it all apart right after dinner.

I was expecting a silly bezel retention system, and thats definatly what it has. i popped off the rep t-127 with little effort and snapped on a nice aftermarket t-19 superdome thats slightly taller and much more domed than say a clarks or slimeball990 brand t-19. Anyways the new crystal took a lot of force to snap it on but its on there in one piece. Theres no way its ever coming off by accident thats for sure.

NOW, i just need to figure out how to get the crystal retention ring to fit. The rep crystal had a larger outside diameter by like 0.2mm so now the bezel retention ring is loose even with the pastic ring and just pops right off. I wonder if a good aftermarket retention ring and bezel assembly would grab onto this new crystal nice and tight?

If this aftermarket crystal I installed is anywhere near gen spec, then a proper retention ring should fit right???

    dizz

possibly.....but I sent mine off to JMB to mill me a proper retention ring and get rid of that plastic washer.

  4. Yes I understand the 2893 is designed to have an add on GMT function (in the 2893-2. the -1 and -3 are not GMT) whereas the 2836 GMT is a rep mod based as far as I can see on the 2893-2. I cannot see any mechanism in the 2893-2 to allow the 24 hour hand to skip. And there is no getting away from the fact it is too thin for the available cases though it is a higher quality movement undoubtedly.

Sure, that's how the 2893-2 GMT hour hand moves, by hour skipping so it's synchronized....my breitling longitude moves that way, and so do many of the older GEN Panerai GMT watches like the 29 and 63 (which use 2893-2).....in comparison, the GEN Rolex GMTs with the 3185 movements also hour 'skip' the GMT hand...............the smooth sweep GMT adjust of the modified 2836-2 is not correct.

  5. My understanding is the 2893 uses a very similar GMT setup to the 2836 so I'm not sure what is meant by a proper GMT movement or adjusting by the hour, Take a look at the mechanism here - http://www.cousinsuk...A2893-1,2,3.pdf - no sign of any fancy gearing, the parts look very similar to a clone 2836 GMT I had stripped down on the bench last week.

Oh and based on recent experience with Yuki over an Explorer I case, dial and bracelet, I would give Yuki a wide berth, everything had to go back in the end as the case was not compatible with gen parts and the dial was frankly poor. The bracelet had 'Rolex' upside down on the clasp. What a load of crap frankly.

2836 is not a true GMT movement...that is a basterdized modification made by REP manufacturers...

no doubt the 2836 is a very reliable movement, but in fit and finish cannot be compared to a 2893 movement....the 2893-2 is a true GMT movement designed by ETA and the 24 hand skips hour to hour as a true GMT hand should.

Also, the finer quality finish of the 2893-2 compared to the 2836/2824 is noticeable when you wind a 2893/2892....it feels closer to winding feel of a Rolex movement.

The main problem is the 2893 being much thinner than 2836....so it's no where near a direct swap.

  6. yeah...Caveat Emptor....the buyer is a sucker...but that does not make it right..............the seller has a duty to represent what he is selling honestly and to the best of his ability....keeping Ebay an honest selling market (as much as we can) is better for all of us in the long run.....I for one would like to see Ebay remain as genuine as possible......this also brings less heat on "US":...the REP community

  7. A....I think the mis-communication was that this movement is a 1575...which is a 1570 w/date = 1575 movement....however, if you open it up the engraving on the plates will say "1570"....never 1575...

Now....it's a totally different story to assume that this watch has a 1570(5) GMT.......which is what some consider a 1575 to be...but are not....1570 GMT would obviously only be found in 1675 and 1655 watches....the movement would have all the additional gearing required for the GMT 24 hand

which the watch for sale here would not have......

BUT....this is a good price for a Rolex with a 1570(5) movement....especially if the movement is clean and running.

"Ok, and where do you read it has a 1575 caliber? "

Because that is what comes in these watches, I have a couple...bought them for the movements.

This is not my first rodeo.

"Comes with a generic gold tone and ss jubille style band."

I did not assume the bracelet to be worth anything but if it has a genuine clasp...the clasp is worth about $25.

The dial and hands are worth $50 - $75.

The case with solid gold bezel and gold cap crown is worth around $150.

"I'd want to see pics of the movement before getting too excited about this one.. It could be rusted out and barely working, or it could be an ETA or Tudor modified ETA...."

I bought a couple items from this guy and the watch will be exactly what he says it is.

Sorry for the bother, keep buying 1570/75 on eBay. :animal_rooster:

  8. As an owner of both GEN and REP watches....I report any garbage seller on Ebay that tries to pass off fake Panerai, Rolex, etc....for the real thing.

If you are selling something branded on Ebay that is not of genuine brand, you should disclose it....if legally possible....if not, you should not be selling it on Ebay.......worse is if you are trying to pass is off as real.....unfortunately there are un-informed Ebayers out there that get suckered all the time.....and they end up giving the rest of us REP collectors a bad image......I already have a bad image of myself, I don't need someone adding to it.:D

  9. I know I read it somewhere around here but I cannot find the thread now........Q: when dealing with acrylic crystals w/cyclops....does the numbering designate a purpose, like the position of the cyclops? Are all 25-xxx crystals the same diameter?

The reason I'm asking is I have 2 cartel 1680's, one with the REP and one with the Clark 127 crystal...on both, the cyclops looks slightly shifted to the right....so it is not completely centered over the DW opening.....not to mention the additional issue with the DW numbers "11" to "19" being sightly shifted towards the left in the window, other numbers line up pretty well....

so, is this a crystal issue? a dial/window issue? DW issue?.....can different model number crystal/cyclops solve the problem?

Does anyone have this issue with their cartel 1680's? :bangin:

And would a getting a different 25-xxx solve this issue? :g:

    25-116

    25-127

    25-125

Finally.....with regards to the Clark 127 and the REP crystal, I'm not seeing any optical difference...only thing is the CC has that nice bevel along the top edge....but I'm still not getting the cyclops centered on either.
