  1. Does the A-2892 movement in this rep come with the top-quality glucydur balance (3 hour-glass arms) rather than the nickel-gilt one (4 straight-sided spokes) found on most ETA's (2824 AND 2892) ? If you could please post some photos with balance stopped that would be great! It looks like Trusty's does, but hard to tell with the others. Also, is the lume poor on all the versions? Josh has confirmed both his versions come with magnetic shield now.
  2. Thanks - there's some really useful info here! I'm looking for a GMT to put a 2893 movement into. But I have a question about the hand stack order: on the 2893, the order is 24h - h - min - sec; and I thought it's the same on the Omega GMT cal. 1128. Here's what Ofrei has to say (somewhat coyly): "Hole size of the 24 Hour hand is 1.80 mm, which is the same size found on the 24 hour hand used on the ETA 2893-2 Caliber 1128 just might be based on ETA 2892 and the hole sizes just might be 90/150/25/180." Or have I misunderstood something? Anyway I gather it's not easy to put rep GMT hands (from a modified 2836) into a 2893 - so I may have to get gen hands?
  3. Beautiful watches! Anyone know if the GMT De Ville is available with an ETA movement? I'm thinking of swapping in a spare 2893... many thanks all...
  4. I would also praise the Railmaster 39mm version. I have the same one from Ruby and it is very good indeed. The AR on the crystal is really great -it's easy to forget there is a crystal at all. The lume is good, but as Tom said, not as good as the gen (or my Seiko, which is probably even better); alas gen dials in this size are very hard to find. The 2824 movement is good; but I am planning on putting a nice 2892 movement from torby in instead. The hands are good - hard to fault even under a 10x loupe. As everyone has said, this is one of the classic designs and this a really nic rep. Whatever you choose, good luck and enjoy!
  5. This is a great project. I like the railmaster (39mm version from Ruby) but the PO hands would be excellent. BTW, the 39mm version takes a 32mm dial, and 42 mm case uses the 34.5mm dial (more easily found). Does anyone have a source for the original Raily (cal 2403) hands? Can't find them on the usual sites...
  6. All those who've replaced a 2824 with a 2892, does the 1mm difference in thickness affect the position of the crown stem at all, please? Specifically when using a screw-down crown. Everything else - diameter, hands, dial feet - is the same. many thanks for any advice.
  7. Fascinating thread I've just come across, but I'm still confused. I've heard the Nickel balances were usually "gilt" so indistinguishable in colour from Glucydur? Also, does the balance arm shape give the metal used: hourglass shape = Glucydur, straight side = nickel? I've heard Glucydur can be either type. Finally does the 2892-A2 in reps usually come with Glucydur balances - I have several of these movements, usually with straight-sided balance arms, whether rep or gen(eric)....
