  1. Will that lume/varnish come off TJ? Are there the shapes of the markers underneath eg printed white circle that can be used as a guide? Did you use a tooth pick and magnifying lens? If it will come off then have a few practice runs because you will get there.

  2. I've been looking into this. Whilst "10m" kind of implies it'll be fine to have a bath with, or to go to the swimming pool, it's probably not. The movement of your hands swimming and hitting the water means it's not static. I think 3-5 ATM is what you'd need to feel safe doing a bit of swimming in it, and definitely more if you're a diver.

It's an old myth about the movement in water. You would need to move your arm at about 32mph to add 1atm of pressure. If your watch tests out at 3atm you can swim in it. However if it says 3atm on the back then don't risk it as it may not be that water resistant and there is little margin for error.

  3. Was instantly obvious to me as I'm a lume-freak but do I like it? Yep - my second one is on its way.

If you ever want to change the bezel insert do not under any circumstances try to remove the bezel even with a genuine tool. Would rather not say why :)

As for timekeeping ... pretty much the same as the real thing.

Just waiting for a testing machine to arrive and then I'll let you know how safe it is for swimming ;)

  4. If you like custom, I think you will still want to mod it, afterall, no point in building from scratch when you can just mod an existing piece :whistling: As before, I think it's an excellent illustration of what it would have looked like if Tudor had built the 79190 as a MilSub instead of a civilian release :) Thinking about it, there have been a few military issue GMTs with all blue bezel inserts, so I think fitting a blue insert when I 'enlist' mine will really be in keeping with that overall potential :) Infact, I might even put that all in my 5517 case and put the Snowflake dial in the 5513 case instead (both projects have to take a backseat to my plans to convert my 16610 to a 16800  )

Hello TeeJay, what's your 5517 case like? How close? Where did you get it? I'd quite like a 5517 Milsub Date if I can find a way to carve out a date window :) A buddy of mine has the real deal. It looks battered and always goes back in a 6ft high safe so I'm guessing rarely gets worn :(

  5. If you have the original dial and hands (I didn't notice it was a replacement) I say mod away, just don't do the fixed bars.

As for the sapphire to acrylic, it won't work. Best bet is to do the mods to the 79090 and leave the 79190 alone. Not certain but I'm not even sure a plastic sub insert will work on the 79190 bezel.

Thanks the crystal info Gavidoc. Truth is I have completely abandoned the Tudor mod idea. I've got a TC case on the way and am just going to build "something" with a 2824, spare tudor dial etc. I have a Snowflake dial that may come into the mix. Can you recommend a suitable rep Tudor case for the Superdome?

  6. You said nothing wrong, I think most feel the same.

Very few of you come across as civilised Woof. I was after a debate not insults. I'm always happy to change my mind and do the right thing. That's maybe why I'm worth millions. You were right about the watch. You just didn't articulate it very well ;) Anyway I guess you're busy sniffing other boys bums with a name like woof but here's to our next debate :)

  7. Thanks, I've got better pics somewhere, but photobucket's not really cooperating at the moment... Building from parts really does deliver that sense of 'I built that...' whenever you look at the time :good::drinks:

Yep I think that's the way to go. Okay I'll put the original dial back in and hands, then see if I still want to mod it. If not it can go back in storage for another 10 years and I'll wear the Franken :)

  8. Mine's really a composite of a reproduction 79190 dial in a rep 5513 case, not a pure 79190...

I'm contemplating a U-Turn TeeJay in which case I will go the same route as you. Parts come up often enough. I'd just use a 2824. The strong feelings here have definitely given me second thoughts. There are less and less full sets available.

Oh one last thing ... I forgot I'd swapped the dials about a year ago when I did the lume. Those who know their Tudors will know mine has the WRONG dial for a 79190 :) So, I must have wanted to conserve the original because my spare dial is the original, not this one. Must be a sign :) Now we can all sleep at night ;)

  9. How are you going to put a plastic crystal on a 79190? The construction is too different i believe. The 79190 was the transition to the modern style press in crystal. I don't think there is a frugal retaining ring like on the plastic guys.

I have a 79090 retaining ring, tensioner etc. I have not taken the existing bezel off yet so I can't be sure it will fit. But unless they changed the actual case then it will. Fingers crossed.

  10. PS Having finally got the pics to load on my iPhone, I'm going to do that setup with my own 79190, because it looks awesome, and the angles of the sword hands perfctly complement the triangular markers :victory: Indeed, had Tudor released a MilSpec 79190, like Rolex did with the 5517, that is exactly what it would have looked like. It may be a fantasy build, but personally speaking, I'd consider it an accurate 'prequel' and a perfect 'what if...' :good::drinks:

Hahaha ace TeeJay! But that means mine wont be the only one anymore :) Really happy to meet somebody that knows where I was headed with this. Maybe still am :) The Tudor Sub is such a perfect weight and size. So you have a 79190 too! I'll post some pics when I've loaded the new acrylic superdome and bezel. I think it will look amazing. Will you be going the fixed lug route? I have some genuine vintage Seamaster hands that I will most likely use in the final build for the sake of quality. Obviously genuine Superdome too.

  11. No, just nobody cares. That's a game my 7-year-old plays.

Personally, I'm with the Zigmeister on the lume job. You took something that isn't made anymore and could never be replaced, and altered it.

If you want to buy a 996 and modify it, go ahead. Porsche still runs the factories that make the parts, anything you want to change could be changed back.

But don't buy a 356 and hack it up. There are fewer and fewer every year, and they're a piece of history now.

If cost is no object, why destroy something irreplaceable when you can achieve exactly the same result using readily available parts?

No way, your 7 year old? Sneed? I didn't think you were out of nappies yourself mate.

I'm not destroying it. Any fifth grader could explain to you the laws of physics but E= MC squared and energy can't be destroyed. Just changing form and it will no doubt change back.

Now, bedtime story over, go and have a lie down eh?

  12. Thanks, I would post some photos of it, but I'm experiencing camera/phone/pc issues at the moment, but I will put some up at some point in the future :) I feel exactly the same way about Tudors, all the style and aesthetic of a Rolex, but without The R Word on the dial, so they never draw a second (or even first) glance and fly totally under the radar :) I have a custom Rolex project of my own planned based on the 6542, but involving a monochromatic bezel insert and a 1016-style dial and a 1675 large GMT hand :) I guess that's your call on the lug bars, I just figure as you've got the replacement parts anyway, you might as well go the whole nine yards with your plan :good::drinks:

    Birds of a feather TeeJay!

Hey if we could get Damasko to ice harden our cases we would have the ultimate watch. Rolex really should buy the patent. I mean, they bought most of their others and this would mean that they would never scratch!

PS Please show us some pics when it is done.

  13. Lmao D :inverted: you certainly have a gift for stirring it up mate! Good on ya and hey it's your watch do with it what you will ;) great lume job too, maybe I should have left the refinishing on the bracelet to you after all!

    Have a great weekend ;)

Hahahah you too SgtGUK! Shame that more people didn't want to play :)
