I was just thinking how nice the dial was. Didn't know it was a yuki. How is the gilt on it? Assume it's printed, by I'd imagine if there's enough clear coat you probably couldn't tell.

    Very nice piece!

Thanks. Yes, the gilt is printed, it's fine on the wrist though. Here's a close up.

  2. What pearl is in that insert?

    Pearl and insert from Yuki.
Lovely dial. Did you relume it yourself?? Can I also ask where you got your spring bars from? Gen?

Thanks. Yeap, I re-lumed the Yuki dial. Gen-spec springbars from Watch Sales Outlet.
  3. Did you modify the bezel or the crystal? Looking at the older photos it looks like the crystal isn't as high as before but the bezel doesn't seem different.

I'd really like one of these but the large recess around the pushers would probably bother me. How do you find it in person?

No the crystal hasn't been modded. As previously mentioned it's a Clark T21. The top lip of the bezel has been sanded slightly so there's a small ridge around the top now.

The watch is comparable in size to a 1016 and wears well.

Absolutely agree on the hands, it's the kind of thing I would never have looked at before I started hanging out here. Where did you source them please?

0.26mm white hands from CousinsUK. Hub of the hands dipped in acetone to remove paint for a gen-like look.
  5. Thanks guys. The hands are fiddly being so small but not too difficult to do. Just need to protect the dial when removing the original ones. I may try tackling the crown logo on the dial at some point, replacing it with a gen from a donor dial.

The sub-dial at 6 is not functional, right? How does the thickness of the case compare to the gen?

Correct, the sub-dial at 6 is non-functional. The case itself is marked 6263, so the same as the Daytona reps. It's slightly thicker than the gen I'd say

  7. Well, I bought a black dial pre-Daytona 6238 a couple of weeks ago from Josh on a whim.

I put it up for C&R sale, but there was no love for it. So, decided to mod it instead :)

The Cartel sub-dial hands are just too thick. I bought a thinner set of 0.26mm diameter hands in white, carefully removing the the paint from the hub with acetone to get a look closer to the gen. I stained the lume of the hour and minute hands ever so slightly with coffee and painted the tip of the large chrono second hand too.

During the movement removal, the L-shaped lever that allows the positioning of asymmetric pushers fell off, it was just loosely glued in place. After cleaning I used JB Marine Weld epoxy to hold it firmly in place. Needless to say, the lower reset pusher will only be used sparingly in future. I guess this is a problem applicable to all Cartel Daytonas with the Venus 75 movement.

Rather than the squarish Cartel crystal I went for a Clark T21 crystal that is slightly more rounded, lower in profile and generally more vintage in feel.

Next step was to shape, soften and age the case to give the watch an appropriate patina.

  8. Thanks for the information! I'll be following your lead.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you source your case? Does it accept a 26.5mm dial?

Picked up the watch around 3 years ago from Puretime. I've just checked and unfortunately it looks like it's no longer available, a pity as it's a good starting point. The dial was from Ingod44 26mm if I remember rightly, also no longer trading. Bezel assembly is from WSO. The insert, the closest I could find, off eBay from a UK seller. Pearl from Yuki. The crystal is a gen T19 serivce crystal. NATO strap from Phoenix, the original MOD supplier.
