My first mod! The gen dial adds so much more quality because of the deeper waves and better lume. In the process I also updated the movement with a sealed swiss ETA 2824.
Looking good Where did you source the parts from?

I still haven't been able to get access to a camera to take a decent picture of the watch, but randomly came across this dealer who had a decent picture of it. They're selling it for $229. I got mine for $40 Either way, I know that it is inaccurate to the gen 2531.80, but, my project is to improve it. Here's what I'm starting from:
(Mine now has vintaged yellow lumes on the dial)

Been thinking about Davidsen's 127, and the 111h but the new IWC Big pilot is tempting...as well as the Breitling Navitimer. Maybe I should just sober up and save my money.
Any ideas? This bonus money is just burning a hole in my pocket.
How about a Vintage Submariner to keep the LV company?

Following the hassle I had with the slime, I couldn't in good conscience allow anyone else to buy from them. It stuns me that they have such a high rating, because their product is in no way identical to the original, and easily identifiable. On one email, where I described the problem, they even admitted that they were aware of the problem and were trying to get their factory to sort it out! SO much for 'LIAR All customers satisfied with product/service' Karma will make sure they get what's coming to them eventually.

well it seems that the ultimate PO is wining the daily beater category
lets see about the other categories specially the dress watch
cheers
My feelings about a dress watch, is that most important, it must look Sharp. It's not going to be used for anything other than looking nice, as dress watches are seldom worn long enough to even really be used as time-keepers, so it doesn't need any 'functions' like chronos or moon-phase, it literally only needs a dial and hands. Here is my current top four
Daily Beater - Omega Planet Ocean 42mm
Dress Watch - Rolex Submariner
Smart Casual - Rolex Daytona on Leather
Sporty - Rolex Submariner or Omega Speedmaster Professional X-33 (my idea of sport involves swimming)
Vintage - Omega 2531.80 Work In Progress

Interesting indeed Teejay, why not take a trip to Vegas and I'll drive over you while photgraphing my watch?
Sounds like a plan

PS
I'm really not trying to be a jerk about this, but seeing those 'Worlds Worst Police Chases' shows and the amount of totally stupid car crashes that could be avoided, I'd just rather people were a bit more mindfull of the dangers of car travel
-
I was at a dead stop when I took the photo, but thanks for your concern.
Your speedo is reading 50 and the Revs are nearly on 2000.
Interesting definition of 'dead stop'

I'll dig out my proper camera and try some better pics tomorrow. Battery is long since flat in the watch, so I don't know if It runs. Maybe I'll try replacing it.
Awesome, I can't wait to see the pics of it. I really ought to get decent quality pics of my watches, but I really only have access to my phone's camera, which, although great for quick snaps of the Mrs and the pets, doesn't really cut it for close up work
It's funny, when I first got my Submariner, and even my Planet Ocean, I really liked their 'prinstine condition', but, having started work on my POS 2531.80, and plans for a Vintage Submariner, that worn look is certainly starting to appeal to me. As I said, it might not be accurate to a specific model of Rolex, but it's still a nice looking watch that I'd wear any day
-
Looks almost like a Submariner with an Exploerer II bezel. To be honest, regardless of how accurate it is to a Rolex model, it looks like quite a nice watch. I'd wear it any day.
-
This is an idealized list, not pieces in my collection, and I couldn't totally narrow it down to four, so I gave options.
Daily Beater - Omega Planet Ocean 42mm or Vintage Rolex/Tudor Submariner
Dress Watch - Omega Seamaster 2531.80 or Patek Philipe Classic Series Gondolo
Smart Casual - Panerai Luminor Base or Patek Philippe Gondola
Sporty - Rolex Submariner or Omega Speedmaster Professional X-33 (my idea of sport involves swimming)

I too would find it real hard to beleive that was a full service.
I wouldn't be so sure. After all, you can go to tailors in Bangkok who will make a full suit in 24-48 hours. Perhaps it is similar with these watch dealers.

I was just wondering the best ways to go about vintaging lumes on watch hands. I accidentally vinataged the lumes on my 2531.80 by leaving it under a daylight lamp for two hours. Lumes that were perfectly white, went as yellow as those on a vintage submariner. However. The lumes on the hands were untouched. I need to get new hands for the watch anyway, so was planning on vintaging them to match the lumes on the dial. Can anyone suggest the best method for achieving this yellowy color, or would baking them under the same daylight lamp work (as it didn't do anything with the existing hands)

Not meaning to be a jerk here, and in as nice a way as possible, would it not be safer to take a picture of your watch while your car is parked, not moving at 50 in 'rush hour' traffic? There's enough accidents on the roads already, let's not go causing any more
PS Awesome photo

OKay, I'm pretty stoked at the moment. I've re-set the titanium bezel insert so the triangular marker is lining up with the 'missing scallop'. It's not lined up as the insert should be lined up, but, given the nature of the bezel, it's making the best of a bad situation. During my investigation of the forum, I came across the review of the Tudors, a link lead me to a pic of a Tudor which is precicely the color scheme that my 2531.80 will wind up. Black dial with vintaged yellow lumes, and a dark blue bezel. I didn't know if the colors would work together, but, having seen this Tudor, this is definitely the color combination I want

I'm no expert on YachtMasters, so I couldn't say how accurate/inaccurate it might be, but, either way, that's a really nice looking watch, and a very nice gift.

Problem solved, my fiance had a bead-bracelet that was the same gauge wire as the spring, so I have simply made myself a new one. I had enough wire left over to make eleven more, so, if anyone needs a new bezel spring, these are available. How does $20 shipped sound?
-
I managed to get the bezel off no trouble. Realligned the insert no trouble. Was putting it all back together, when the bezel spring shot across the room. It happened a few times, but I managed to track it down. Until this time. I know it will turn up in the future, but I cannot be bothered to scrabble around for it any further, so might just as well buy a replacement spring. I've looked on Ofrei.com with no success. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Oh I agree entirely, 100% POS, but, as I said, it's a guilty pleasure... It keeps good time, and that's why I'm planning on replacing the parts to make it a nicer watch. Financially, I know I can buy a new watch for cheaper than the cost of replacing the parts, but I can't help loving it and want to give it the chance to be more than it is now

Do NOT I repeat NOT order your bezel from that dealer on eBay. I had the misfortune of ordering a Rolex Submariner bezel from them last year, and their product was junk. They claim (on their auction) that the item will not be told from the original item. This is bull. My mother in law, who knows nothing about watches, could tell the two bezels apart. Whenever someone leaves this dealer negative feedback, they use the same reply: "Liar All customers satisfied with product/service" even when there is evidence to the contrary. They are a total sleaze and deserve to get busted for copyright infringement and false advertizing. Given I own and love rep watches, I am not someone particularly bothered about those things, but in this case, that person really deserves to get removed from eBay for their sales. They may have a high rating, but those people were clearly either idiots who could not tell the real thing from garbage, or, people who did not care about accuracy and would settle for any garbage. Just a quick FYI

I recently bought a $40 Omega SMP 2531.80 (Long story as to why I got it) and it goes without saying, that in terms of rep accuracy, it's not too good. Infact, it'd only pass as an Omega with someone who knew nothing about Omega watches. The inaccuracies are:
Moulded links on bracelet and wrong deployment clasp
Bezel only has 11 of the 12 scallops machined
Bezel insert is polished titanium with markings laser etched
Minute Hand does not have luminous material along the skeleton sides, only at the tip
Hour markers are in the 2220.80/Rolex Submariner style
The dial is black and the date window is incorrectly positioned too close to the crown.
Drying condensation in the case under a daylight lamp baked the lumes, and they are now the yellow/cream color of those on a Vintage Submariner. (my fault, not manufacturer flaw)
But. It keeps good time, and the sweep on the second hand is as smooth as an ice-cold beer. With my Planet Ocean returned for repair, this watch has been getting priority wrist time over my Submariner (I've pretty much gone right off Rolexs) and this watch has become something of a shamefull pleasure... Kind of like having the hots for your wife's younger sister... You know you shouldn't, but can't help yourself...
Anyway. My project. Some of the inaccuracies, I actually like, some of the more glaring errors, I am planning on correcting, but I am having trouble tracking some parts down.
This is what I am planning on replacing:
Bracelet.
Bezel and Bezel Insert.
Hands. (only the minute hand needs replacing, but probably best to swap them all out for lume consistency)
I have a source for the bracelet, but the rest is posing a problem. The dealer I got the watch from sells a 007 Commemorative watch that would make a suitable donor for the bezel and hands, but, given the flaws of this watch, relying on that watch being any more accurate would be a gamble (and a costly one if it was as inaccurate) I've seen Ofrei.com, but, am not paying more for the parts than an entire new rep would cost, so I was wondering if anyone could steer me in the direction of some decent replacement parts?
Any advise or help would be greatfully received.

Thanks for the links, I'm going to check them out right now
I know what you mean about accuracy. My Planet Ocean is not a particularly accurate rep, but I prefer the inaccruracies over the gen anyway. (Serifs on a that font?? Crazy ) My 2531.80 project watch would only pass as an Omega to someone who knows nothing about watches (aka the majority of Joe Public ) but I still really like it, and actually prefer it over my Submariner, which has fooled an experienced jeweller into thinking it was genuine. Accuracy isn't always everything, and if you like the watch, that's all that matters
