Well said automatico.  This is why I don't wear "new" Rolex, and stick entirely to vintages.  They hearken back to earlier days when the company had different priorities.  Although, I doubt many people today would look at an old Rolex and "get it" about the statement it makes compared to new bling / new corporate priorities.

Nanuq, have you tried the modern Black Bay out? I feel like the black bezeled one with the red triangle has a lot of mojo.

And honestly, I like the Black Bay sort of for similar reasons explored in that article...

I like the Black Bay because it's a very good rep of a gen watch that I could actually buy.

Most vintage Rollie stuff is just too expensive as gen for a lot of us younger guys to try and pull off.

It's why I don't have a PN Daytona. I love the PN, think it might be the nicest-looking watch I've ever seen besides maybe vintage Pateks.

But there's no way in the world, not even close, that i could get away with wearing a 50-100k watch.

  2. there's real SevenFriday watches for sale on eBay, from dealers who have hundreds and or thousands of positive transactions.

why you are dealing with a guy who has no feedback when other dealers are available I will never know.

    local or not.

if i was you, either buy gen at an AD or from a vendor that has a solid reputation...or hit up the TDs for a rep.

the reps aren't that different from gen.

some sloppy casework sometimes on the reps and or a different color fonts/diff materials/slightly diff engravings etc. depending on the model.

none are glaring ''oh my God thats a fake watch'' tells.

also check out Jomashop, Authentic Watches, and Ashford.

a lot of that eBay stuff is grey market, especially Baume + Mercier, SF, Michael Kors, Citizen etc.

depending on the brand this means sometimes no warranty, or no serial #, but sometimes you can save even up into the 4 figures on price.

I've personally bought a couple gens this way.

  3. If I was you, I would buy a Cartel Tudor to start with.

    Get an ETA version.

You can replace the stock dial with a Yuki dial for around 200 USD...there's a couple options depending on what look you want.

You can use your jewelry skills to drill out the case for gen-spec springbars, or age an insert with bleach.

Put a rafflestime casback on and ding up the watch a little bit, and it'll be decent.

Yes, you could spring for a Yuki/Phong case, and put a real Tudor ETA in it...or get a real dial...but those are 4-figure builds...

  4. I would advise the OP to follow the crowd and source a modder.

one can also buy full gold or 18K/ss aftermarket bracelets instead of getting what may be dodgy quality from the dealers.

then install a Rollie clasp on the bracelet, at least then you know you have real 18K on your wrist.

Aftermarket or Gen full 18K + gen dial = cant get much better than that

  5. Atlanta is really nice.

think 10 months of decent weather.

In the last five years the actual city proper has exploded with suburban people taking up roots intown + people moving from other cities/countries.

I give the same advice I give to people moving to Los Angeles:

    LIVE NEAR WHERE YOU WORK.

Like, for real...(to use American vernacular) live near where you work.

The traffic in Atlanta is bad during the day and usually doesn't clear out until 8-9pm.

So figure out where you'll have to go every day and live in the closest interesting place for you.

Keep your head up, and stay safe.

The city isn't the safest place. It's just not.

    Especially compared to CLT.

Never leave anything valuable in your car, there's a good chance if you live in town once a year your window will be broken/car broken into...

especially if you live anywhere other than Buckhead/Brookhaven or the suburbs.

now, I'm not recommending living in Buckhead, mind you, there isn't too much fun stuff there...

VaHi, Inman Park, Midtown, West Midtown, Little 5, Cabbagetown, Candler Park, Decatur, etc etc etc all have their charms and if you have the ability to live in one of these older walkable neighborhoods do it.

Most of these 'hoods are experiencing a great deal of infill- condos and apartment complexes etc going up everywhere if that's your thing.

    Me, I prefer a '20s - '50s bungalow with a patio/porch! :)

I spent almost 20 years in Atlanta in total, it's a great place.

Lots of good people, good food, and heartbreakingly agonizing professional sports.

  6. Today, a classic

    That dial is really nice!

Subdial printing is really bright and screams quality, even over black.

The 'Perfect Clones' ones have a more gen-like subdial spacing (subdial at 6 isnt cut off) but the printing quality on those ones is heinous.

Which dealer did you get that one from?
