  1. Does the Pope wear white?
  2. So, what I believe you are saying is that EVEN though we collect reps (and yes, also gens; count me in, our family have at least 10-15 of them), we're still into a hobby which requires some purchasing power...hence, perceived or actual lower-incomed people would not be present as much here? Hmm, maybe. Nanug made an important point, that it may well be a cultural angle. If I had gone into a swimming forum, I might just have asked the same question, only I wouldn't have because societially, we're not used to seeing many black kids in say, Olympic swim teams. But rep watches? That I didn't think applied. P.S.: Thanks, Nanug!
  3. It's serious, too. But, sigh, he doesn't love watches as much as I do! That might be a deal-breaker.
  4. We still haven't bought it, and all suggestions are STILL being considered though I am partial to Andrew, as stated. But if that is the case, that all of our rep dealers get it fromt he same source, why is it that there is such disparity in the photos and descriptions of watches, not to mention when you actually get two identical watches -- same movement, etc. -- from two dealers, which are COMPLETELY different? It already happened. If you look at all the examples of this 007 watch, the colour of the bezel is such deeper with Andrew's shots, but it's more than that, it's deployant buckle etc. To me, this suggests that it's not all the same supplier, but hey, what do I know.
  5. I was JUST about to post this very point. Mind you, Queen Mary -- the present queen's grandma -- also had the odd reputation of being a klepto, but not in the sense that she would actually pilfer stuff (including ormolu clocks, by the way), but because she would stay in front of a piece she wanted until she was given it, or was allowed to purchase it dead cheap. So, who knows. King Farouk is a very scuzzy historical character (he once tried to seduce/rape Queen Frederika of Greece when King Paul was in the next room!), but one who was an horologist-extraordinaire. I saw his watch collection in a museum in Cairo, when I was a kid. Maybe an Egyptian member can remember the name of said museum.
  6. Ahh, I see. I rarely go to the OT in this or any other forum that I've frequented. In fact, I hate doing so because of the political angles which tend to sour a lot of potential relationships, in this day and age. I'm fairly comfortable dealing with men, and I am not a feminazi in the sense of being outraged if guys post stuff about boobs, sex, or anything remotely drool-centric like that. I wouldn't like to think it stopped just because we were around! Anyway, I got a mouth. If I don't like something I'll pipe up, rather than scoot out of here in terror. P.S.: To make this post a little on-topic, just to mention that I have noticed here in Miami at least, a lot of black people wearing Rolexes, which was not the case even 10 years ago. So they are buying them, just maybe haven't found our forums yet. Look at me, I didn't until a fortnight ago when my boyfriend pointed it out!
  7. Heh, first, loved the diddy. But your stat doesn't make sense. Aren't there 14-20 million Jewish people around the world, TOTAL? By that reckoning there should be very few, if any Jewish posters here and I'll bet you there are plenty! Why? Maybe because of the perceived affluence Jewish people have...ah, I think I just answered my own question (or maybe not!, since reps are WAY cheaper than real ones, wouldn't it follow that perceived lower incomed people would flock to these forums?).
  8. I can't speak for anyone but myself (because my ventriloquist dummy is at the cleaners), but I've never felt or been made to feel the least uncomfortable here because I'm a woman. Much on the contrary, I would say. Now, if by that you meant that since there is a lack of women posting here, this forum might be female-friendly, I would say that's just the nature of the business, I guess. It's like a soccer forum. Or a lack of males in a rep handbag forum. "Female-unfriendly" that is.
  9. I think I know the one to which you refer, actually! Was it the PAM Purdey Lion, against the background of a Polish girl's thighs? You won't believe this, but it was that very sequence of photos that made me say, okay, she's wearing a PAM, it's huge, and she and I are rather similar physically. How bad can I look? Famous last words, maybe... Kollektor, sure! Please post those photos if you can.
  10. Since the fortnight that I become more than a lurker here, which also is the case in other rep forums, I've noticed one thing that is glaringly obvious. Almost 100% of the 'wrist check' shots and the like, are all from us whiteys, or at least, non-African-Americans, etc. Are black members in rep forums that scarce? It doesn't matter one bit what colour one is, but it's curious, yes? -- and perhaps the tiniest bit discomfitting that we're so vanilla. Ack! Perhaps this isn't for the General Discussion area, but for OT. Sorry, admins. Please adjust the thread if necessary.
  11. Ack, this reminds me that since starting to post on this forum, I've bought two PAMs on which I am still awaiting delivery. And your wife's wrist is larger than mine (5.7"). With this side-by-side shot, it brought home to me the fact that I might look like I'm wearing a clown watch...but the Pannie fever was too strong!!
  12. Ooh, another lady poster. My mum just pulled the trigger with Josh for the large-size Tankissime in YG (another very hot watch if one is into Cartiers, which I'm not, alas). It's practically indistinguishable from the original, save for the cabochon not being the usual blue, but in crystal. Ah well, can't complain for a Benjamin.
  13. That's the very one, TeeJay. Thanks Marrickvilleboy! We've decided that the slightly larger 42.5mm Andrew version with Swiss ETA, and upgraded features (slight AR, as I mentioned), will be the one bought. I owe Andrew my custom after he came through with me, big time.
  14. Addition to list: Will Ferrell in Stranger Than Fiction. http://www.sonypictures.co.uk/win/stranger...index_ended.php Timex Ironman Triathlon Dual-Tech ($50-$120, depending if you can find them. The film made sales skyrocket).
  15. Samir!! *bows and scrapes* I don't care if this was posted before, this newbie is extremely grateful for your "watches in films" repost. My twin love of cinema and watches: bliss!
  16. Wish I could find a link, but in a recent visit down here to South Florida, he was wearing a string of pearls around his neck... And to make the post topical, another schnazzy-awful watch, which however I would've loved to have known the marque of.
  17. Thanks for this comprehensive reply, TeeJay! This is my newbiehood talking, but he is only interested in the new Omega with the "007" in recess (not the 007 swirl one, by the way), in the dial, as I pictured in each of the examples. I had assumed this was a limited marking for tied with the new Bond in Casino Royale, and not a continuing version that Brosnan had worn. Was I wrong? Still happy to receive any more info from you guys, before pulling the trigger to buy this watch.
  18. No one with some info? I am guessing since Andrew has "some AR coating" that this is the best of the lot, but I am also thinking of price, as well as authenticity. Any advice would be much appreciated!
  19. Guys, I did hit the search button before posting this, which yielded so-so results. So I need your input. Dad wants the Omega 007 Seamaster Pro. Best copy out there, if you can point it out. The research said that the Asian movement is almost as good as the Swiss one, but I'm not convinced until I hear it from you guys. Which of these are the most authentic, please? - http://www.ttwristwatch.com/index.php?main...;products_id=27 ($238, Swiss ETA) - http://www.ttwristwatch.com/index.php?main...products_id=169 ($108, 40mm, darker blue?) - http://www.perfectclones88.com/omse10003-s...8242-p-891.html ($238, Swiss ETA, Josh's comparison pics for once I don't think look good; makes the rep look a bit blah) - http://www.silix-prime.com/product.asp?id=1320 (Jay...but dead cheap $150, 2824 ETA, 40mm) ...or any others. Thanks!
  20. Okay, first thoughts is that traditional women's watches wouldn't suit her needs. They are not overly technical, though they fit her size requirements. First thoughts, as I nod off to bed, still awaiting a Chinese rep dealer's email... Chronoswiss Pathos Skeleton White http://www.ttwristwatch.com/images/CHR0003_2.JPG Drawbacks: 38mm (still too big maybe). Leather band. Not TOO bad in terms of gen-rep contrast, though. Bvlgari Ergon Ladies Automatic SS White http://www.perfectclones88.com/bv10004-erg...hite-p-708.html Drawbacks: Don't much care for it, meself. But it's 29mm, it's got seconds hand, and the date. Ladies Santos 100 Chrono SS White Quartz Working Chron Drawbacks: Looks good to me, copy-wise; it's only 33mm, it's got chrono, and is only $118. More later. Link... http://www.ttwristwatch.com/index.php?main...roducts_id=1053
  21. Cristiano Ronaldo (God, thank you for not calling him "Ronaldo" like 99.9% of English-speakers...) is said not to be the brightest person in the world. In fact, I would bet you he and Wayne Rooney together have lower IQs than many dolphins have. Having heard what was said above, it all makes sense now. He probably went into the Burlington Arcade watch shops, and chose "big, shiny, expensive, and MUITO FASHIONABLE, please", and that's it. What a dip.
  22. Another difference is that the rep one has a crown with GG on it, whereas the real one has GUCCI in small script and a tiny R (trademarked). I noticed that Andrew's site pictured it that way too, but when we actually got the watch, it had GG on the crown. Since he modded it specially for us, I didn't even mention it to him, but just so that you know.
  23. Good one! But it had the bling-factor, so I demurred. How about the Casablanca? http://www.ttwristwatch.com/index.php?main...roducts_id=1100
  24. Laz, it seems you targeted mostly men in your post, so I'm not sure if you actually want to take advice from a lady poster, as I am. (That sounds touchy, I realise, but I mean it in the spirit of a "woman's eye" for watches, rather than the implied quantity of male posters here which is obviously higher) My first thought was, he didn't give us enough info on the kind of woman his wife is -- yes, even if you mentioned she's not into golden pieces, or bling bling. If I may ask, what kind of background are you? Blue-collar? White-collar? Is she the type that wants to impress her girlfriends with her new $$$ watch, or does she just want to have it on her wrist for the beauty of the piece? Is she knowledgeable at all about Swiss watches, or is she the kind of person who mostly knows "Rolex", and that's it, not "Patek Phillipe", "Vacheron Constantin", etc.? Would she balk at wearing what might be considered mostly a man's watch (PAMs)? This all makes a difference in first choosing a watch to suit her, then seeing what is out there that is the closest possible to the gens. Without knowing a single-thing about your wife, here are some basic links to one reputable dealer's watches. Show them to her, and see what she says: Gucci Twirl http://www.ttwristwatch.com/index.php?main...d5c1cbaba78274d (From Andrew. Note, I just bought this from him -- awesome --, and I have two real Gucci Twirls, in brown dial, with and without diamonds, but in the wider cuff variety than the reps out there look like. The real Gucci Twirl doesn't come in black dial, but Andrew can mod it for your wife in the brown dial. Ask him. The main differences between the real and Andrew's rep is that my gen has GUCCI in muted grey, and his is in white, with somewhat larger font. Other than that, an ALMOST perfect rep) Franck Mueller "Crazy Hour" (available in several colours) http://www.ttwristwatch.com/index.php?main...;products_id=40 (I've found that people either LOVE this watch, and believe me, it's a very very hot watch at the moment in Ibiza, and the South of France...or they just hate it, and think it looks like it came from a gumball machine. I hover somewhere between both opinions. My mother wears a gen one with her LV Murakami bag -- which I loathe -- and it looks stunning on her) "J12 White Ceramic Men Swiss Quartz" http://www.ttwristwatch.com/index.php?main...roducts_id=1160 (Everyone and their grandmothers wants this watch. Other than Technomarines, this is the hot watch of the moment for women. Real ceramic in the rep, I believe. I include the Men's version because almost all women now who want to be in fashion, are wearing it large. The larger the better, but of course, it's up to your good lady wife) I'll monitor this thread to see what others suggest, but I already know the replies will include: 1) Linking to a really "small-sized" watch, because that's what men think women like, exclusively. And the tiny, spaghetti-thin Gucci watches are so not in at the moment. 2) They'll say, don't show her the Panerai area!, more-or-less because of the reason I already mentioned. For the record, the PAM Purdey Lion looks awesome on a woman. Good luck!
  25. Guys, thanks for the responses! Immediately, of course, I Googled. First hit: "One of Oprah's favorite things
