  1. Wow...what a story.

Yes...you will find this place to be far more than just watches...a Community in the truest sense...and Ubi above is definitely one of the cornerstones of it.

Participate. Read...ask questions...share what you learn...share what you find confusing.

You will find a strange level of support here that is hard to find in even the best of families.

Here's to a stupid recovery, and your participation in the community.

  2. There are no super high accuracy ones available "out of the box" because of issues like assymetrical chrono pusher requirements, dial spacing, and default bracelets. However, you can get them made using V72 (I think that's right...my brain is just waking up) movements and the like for substantial amounts of money, high end dials, etc...but these are expensive.

However, that doesn't mean you can't get a nice one. I have a manual wind (lemania aka Venus aka Seagull ST19) version that although has a frozen 6-o-clock subdial (the 12 hour totalizer doesn't work) is still a beautiful watch. These can be had for a very reasonable price, with a rock solid movement. You can see more pics of mine in the Seagull links in my signature.

  3. I would like to see exactly how our reps are made from start to finish. Factory conditions, storage conditions, tools and parts used.. all the way from assembly up to shipping.... That video would be sacred!

That would be interesting...a view into the rep manufacturing...but yeah...some of it could be very scary as some of it will be high tech manufacturing, others will be dirty, dingy, disgusting condition labouring. Not sure if I want to see that...I like my blissful world of ignorance.

I want Freddy to do a tutorial on some of his photo work!!

We really need somebody to do a detailed breakdown of a new 7753 movement too.

I would love a making-of one of the Concepta Porto frankens...I remember seeing some posts on the machining down of the case...but a new post (maybe with old pics) on putting one together with the whole gen bezel, gen movement, dial, everything...that would be the Schnitzel!!

  4. what is the cost for sending a watch in to one of them ? :) is it mutch ccheaper then going to a store ? :)

Don't go by price. The issue with mechanical watches in general is that there aren't really a lot of good watchmakers who do a good job on mechanical watches in general. Even fewer, can work on chronograph (stopwatch) movements...and even fewer who are willing to work on rep watches AND EVEN FEWER who are have experience in working with REP/Asian mechanical chrono movements.

The Zigmeister (Zigmeister), Bricciola (Domi) and Francisco are a rare breed who are true artists in what they do, experienced, and really nice people. Their prices are fair...more than fair...but more importantly, you are having your babies fixed by extremely qualified people who happen to be great supporters of this great forum. Find this kind of knowledge and community at a local store!!

Likely a store will not fix a rep watch.

Another thing to note with movements is, that a GEN ETA movement can be made in either Switzerland, China or Thailand...and still be a Gen ETA movement. These will take all the gen ETA parts, and can be fixed by ANY watchmaker (if they are willing to work on a GEN ETA movement in a rep case with rep dial).

See this Timezone article for more info.

There are also ETA Clones...likely made by Seagull that are not quite a clone...but similar to the ETA movements.(look for The Zigmeister's breakdown of this movement HERE). These may be serviced by a watchmaker familiar with GEN ETA movements, but may or may not take gen ETA parts...it depends...and you need a watchmaker familiar with asian movements to deal with their fussiness successfully.

    Hopefully this helps.

  5. Interesting...the movements should be very similar in construction to a standard ETA 6497...so you could use that as a base, but the position of some of the gears might be slightly different.

An interesting project...please post your experiences...how you're approaching and learning...so others can benefit from your pedagogical approach.

    It's a very cool idea!!

If they're smaller watches, the challenge might be the movements are smaller and harder to work with...something to keep in mind.
