  1. Hi, everyone - I hope you are having a nice weekend.

I am thinking of getting a Pam 196 Daylight on leather strap, such a beutiful watch. It wuld be my first 44mm Pam, it's really the only 44mm I want.

But is it a very heavy watch? I've got a skinny (6.5") wrist, and I wear some heavy reps, a 42mm Breit Crosswind comes to mind.

I just got a pre-owned 168 Regatta which I really love, but it is pretty heavy for a 40mm, I am surprised.

I know this "very heavy" question is subjective, but, I'd appreciate any advice before I make a $700 mistake :o

    Thanks very much!

  2. Hi, guys - every time I log on to TRC I get the same message - the problems with TRC have been resolved, the database is being re-built and it will be back online in 24 hours. I've gotten this message for 3 days now.

Is is still down or am I missing something?

    Thanks!

  3. Hi, everyone - hope you're having a good day.

I'm thinking of getting my 1st 44mm Pam - a Daylight chrono with black dial.

I've searched the forum but am not getting the info I'd like.

Can anyone tell me what the upgrades and differences are between the 2005 196 Daylight amnd the new 2006 250 Daylight?

    Thanks very much!

  4. I found the link for this 2893 discussion:

Something about the way the hands are attached to the movement and indexed, if not done with some skill, per Zig, you have problems.

So it's not the movement of course. it's the hands installation. And we all know what high level of skill is employed in the assembly of our reps.

  5. Well, you obtain a straight on shot of the watch from the Net or a catalogue, then you need a ruler with metric scale (mm.).

Measure the case diameter of your shot and see if it's bigger or smaller than 44mm.

Hopefully it won't be too far off. Then you do some basic calculating - begin with 4.5 mm is about 10% of 44 mm. as your basic unit.

So if your original is say, 46mm in diameter, you have to decrease the image size to 44mm, 2 mm less. So set your copier to 95%, and your copy should be 44mm case size.

You'll probably have to screw around with it a bit to get it to right size, but it's not so bad.

Another way of wasting company time on our wonderful hobby :)

  6. Thanks for your responses.

Now I remember reading that EL says the 2893 movement is somewhat problematic, he's had more than a few sent back for repair, difficult to repair too. EL said the 2836 is a real workhorse, and more stable.

That has me a bit skittish, the 2893 version is pretty expensive.

Actually, I don't really need a GMT with a true 2nd timezone, maybe I shoud get it with the 2836 instead?

  7. I think it's hard to stop buying, after all, as long as you participate in the forums, eventually a watch will come along that you just have to have.

Also, I find that for myself, if I haven't bought a rep for a few months, I start to get antsy, like "I need to buy a rep soon" feeling. I start to consider watches that didn't interest me before. Most of the time I talk myself out of it, realizing I want to buy something just for the thrill, but will have buyers remorse once I get it.

  8. Well, since you were brave enough to post a wrist shot - I think that 44mm tantalium looks good on you. The lugs pretty much go to the edges of your wrist, but you can see some bracelet links too on the sides, which is good.

A 47mm will definately go beyond the edges of your wrist, the lugs will hang over past your wrist, not good look I'm afraid, but that's my personal opinion.

Be happy you can pull off the 44mm.

And Orlando's wrist is not so skinny, if I remember correctly, he was wearing a 44mm Pam and it fit him appropriately.

Try the correct size xerox method, I've got a bunch of these sitting in a pile in my offfice. The cleaning lady must think I'm weird, I'm sure.

  9. Yes, what RT said.

I too have a 6.5" wrist, but in cross-section it's narrow and deep, not flat and wide. That makes all the difference. 6.5' flat and wide you can get away with.

I've tried on genuine 44mm Pams about 5 times, trying to talk myself into it. They look really big on me, cover my entire wrist.

That said, I now find myself thinking about getting the 196 Daylight, it is such a beautiful watch and I don't have a single Pam. I am slowly breaking down, in spite of its size.

Just trying to rationalize spending $700 on the better chrono movement.

I really don't think you will be able to carry off the 47mm size, sorry. My personal opinion, there is a limit as to what looks good on a wrist, and what looks weird.

But as you can see in my situation, one can talk oneself into most anything.

Make a xerox of the Pam you want in the correct sizxe, cut it out and put it on your wrist, it will give you an idea how it will look. I do this all the time.

  10. Ahem (wee voice in the wilderness) I'm a woman, been on the forums for 3 years, haven't been driven off the forums yet. Gotten close, but that's because of the obsession with Pams (really boring). I really love watches and reps, I've got over 30 of 'em, and I'm not going away any time soon.

I just ignore the avatars and photos of near naked girls, I find it kind of silly and juvenile, if you want to know the truth. To me, a person who feels compelled to post this type of thing seems to have some kind of need to prove something, to impress. The cool guys I know and like would never do this, they don't need to.

The only practical comment I would like to make is that when you are at work and want to check into the forums, having these avatars and photos come up on your screen is not cool.

  11. The only chronographs that can be taken into water are those with screw down pushers, in other words, the pushers have a metal collar around them that you can tighten down. Chronos with regular pushers were not meant to be taken into water. That holds true for the genuines. I don't know if I would risk taking a rep chrono with screw down pushers swimming unless I had it waterproofed by a trusted watchmaker.

There are no ladies sized chronographs with screw down pushers, but the rep Daytona is not too big, and can be considerred unisex.
