The definitive 'Flimy SS Clasp Mod'!

Recommended Posts

I was absolutely smitten after buying my first rep, a Breitling Skyland V3.

The only qualm I had was the flimsy clasp on the bottom of the bracelet.

After scouring the forum(s) for what seemed like millenia hours, it appeard that this was one of those inevtiable afflictions associated with rep-horology....

Until a couple of hours ago where I had an epiphany....

...to use pliers to straighten up the clasp walls to secure it.

Now, due to the materials used and the construction of the bracelet, it's safe to say that the clasp won't break from the sheer brute strength exerted by you.

In retrospect, I would suggest that you use a thin cloth, for example a thin microfibre cloth that comes with your prescription glasses, to cover the clasp before you 'squeeze' the bracelet in order to avoid any scratches. I didn't bother and knew that it could be a problem, but it was just a rep ss bracelet to me and there are much larger marks from desk diving and what not.

Here is a pic of the claw marks left from the pliers: (You could attribute it to 'everyday wear and tear' :p)

As you can see, there's a thin hairline scratch.

End result: Very satisfied :)

The clasp now shuts close with a loud and more assuring 'SNAP!' and it takes a lot more energy open and close it. It's also confidence inspiring, as I'm no longer hesitant to take is bungy jumping with me. :D

Here's the obligatory 'wrist-shot'

The AS v3 is my first and only rep, although I'm sure that it will work on other similar clasps as well such as the bracelet for the rolex sub and others with a flimsy clasp.

I've joined the forums (note the plural) about a month ago, and have spent easily several hours aday catching up on all the news and reviews of the rep world. Thanks for keeping places like these alive, you guys are the foundations and cornerstone for the existance of a high-quality rep world. I can only hope to contribute a little bit to this wealth of knowledge.

I know that the flimsy clasp issue is a common problem among reps as I constantly read about it reviews and posted threads. I hope that somene else would find this useful.

Cheer guys!

btw I bought my 'plier' as a set of 3 from my local hardware store for the equivalent of about USD 6.50

Nicely done!

There was a post by Ubiquitous, lo these many moons past, that described bending the leaves (not the fliplock) of a Rolex clasp slightly to give it a stronger "snap" as the clasp closed.

You can hone your Mad Forum Skillz by trying to find it and bring it back to the top of the active topic list.

Gauntlet tossed! :tu:
