Hello,

I was wondering is someone can tell me and post a side by side picture of the difference between Aftermarket hand and Gen hands for a 1665. I have been looking at at pictures on the internet on ebay and I can not tell the difference. maybe the hour hand is longer. Also De 1665 WSD does it has a super dome or a flat dome, At the end does it matter. I personally like better the super dome look.

Thanks

The diffeence is going to be largely with the shape of the hand frames (i.e. the size and shape of the openings for the lume, etc). To retrofit gen hands to ETA size pinions (90/150/25) requires a significant amount of work, as the gen 1570 hands are quite different in size (I forget what their actual measurements are). Not to mention, genuine hands are not exactly cheap; at least when considering that you'd be modifying them to make them unusable for gen specs thereafter (though you can probably modify the ETA pinions to fit one or more of those hands).

In my opinion, you'd be better off getting a gen 1570 to replace the ETA in your case; this will allow the hands to at least remain in unmodified condition (hence retaining their intrinsic value).

Just my thoughts...

Okay, in looking at this pic:

dialr.jpg

Hour hand: A gen minute hand is going to have a longer 'neck' (portion between the center and the 'mercedes' tip). The portion of lume in this 'neck' will be longer, and the edges of that frame will also be crisper/sharper at the corners. The 'mercedes' tip is also a bit different in terms of the shape of the frame, and the actual triangle tip is usually a little more open with more lume. Some hands are curved and some are flat, BTW.

Minute hand: Again, the frame is a bit off; the lume strip should extend closer to the center towards the pinions (hopefully this makes sense). The hand is also a slight bit short, as it should overlap the minute chapter slightly.

Seconds hand: The biggest issues I see here are the tail of the seconds hand (portion that extends opposite of the pointer tip) as it's a bit short. The shape of the hand is a bit off as well, as the pointer tip should be slightly tapered towards the point after the lume dot.

Gen pics to illustrate the above:

In my honest opinion, a gen set of hands would be a nice upgrade over your current hands.

The hands look gen to me. Probably a set of service replacement hands...

Are their any decent aftermarket redials that look decent to gen? I am looking for one for my 1570 movement 1665. I know MBW is close...but looking for maybe a better redial that fits the 1570...i.e. feet placement, singer dial markings, etc.
