ryaku
I'm creating a new watch and i was wondering if i can have some problem to replace the crystal on my incoming Vintage 5517. I'd like to replace the replica crystal with a domed sapphire crystal (i'm creating an homage so accuracy is not an issue). Do you think it might be tricky? Similar watch: Any tip appreciated R. ubiquitous
Ryaku- Anything should be possible with the right size crystal and gaskets
ryaku
Ubi, thanks, that's reassuring. Project 's gonna start shortly now. As you well know the main concern is sourcing a good sterile dial.
Dizzy
You're not going to be able to do a sapphire crystal but you can go with the factory size T-19 dome acrylic crystal. There are conversion kits out there to put a saphire on that old style case but i have never seen the results, not to mention it issue of water resistance. ryaku
Ok, one more question. Do you guys think it would be easier to buy a noobmariner replacing the bezel with a bezel from a vintage model? Would it be possible in your opinion or cases have completely different measures? In that case i would have a sapphire crystal by default. Thanks again Edited May 30, 2010 by ryaku
ubiquitous
Ryaku, The diameters of a vintage and modern Sub (more specifically acrylic vs. sapphire) are completely different. The modern sapphire crystals are significantly larger in diameter, so it's not simply a matter of exchange from one to the other. Rather, if you have a sapphire crystal of the same diameter as the acrylic along with a corresponding gasket of correct diameter and height, thickness etc, the sapphire could be a direct replacement. But it all depends on whether you can find a sapphire crystal of the correct size.
ubiquitous
BTW, the fundamental construction between a gen 16610/16800 and 1680 are more or less the same; you have a crystal that seats to the rehaut lip (either with the entire crystal as would the case with an acrylic, or with the gasket and sapphire) and then you have a retention ring that seats over the crystal or the gasket. So, keep in mind that the new sapphire crystal should also have a small channel on the underside to seat with the gasket. However, with these factors in mind, you should have a decent, water resistant retrofit May be worth checking with some of the crystal suppliers like GS, or watch supply houses to see if they have something in stock that might work... ryaku
Ubi thanks for the heads-up and patience, it's not a secret i don't know anything about rolex (nor modern nor vintage models). I'll try to keep a non-sapphire glass , i'm afraid i cannot stand too much reflexes now i'm addicted to IWC AR crystals. Maybe i'll change my mind and i'll fall in love with acrylic glasses. It's worth trying, i really love the look of vintage rollies.
