Acrylic Crystals on your Vintage Rep .. Long Term strategy ?

I've been looking at a GMT 1675 rep.. What are you guys doing for crystal replacement when that time comes. I've seen some of the Sea Dwellers advertised as original parts accepting.. is this the reality? Are most of the crystals used in the reps off the shelf generic replacements that can be easily sourced.. or will there be problems at crystal replacement time?

There are wads of variety in acrylic crystals and many ways (some accurate) to attach them. When yours fails, measure up its inner and outer diameters and check GS or Sternkreuz catalogs, or Clark on eBay. You'll find a replacement pretty easily. You might need to gin up an attachment method; in that case JMB is the guy to talk to.

It all depends on the quality of the case used to make the rep. Unfortunately, with a few notable exceptions (MBW), there is little consistency within manufacturing runs of reps, so it is impossible to say, beforehand, whether a given rep will accept gen parts. In these cases, I think your best option is to follow Nanuq's advice. Measure your case & then see what fits. You might even get lucky & find that your case dimensions are close enough to the gen's so that you can install a gen crystal (which may cost more than your rep).

The crystal for a gen 1675 is the Tropic 116 (sorry, I do not have its dimensions).
