I Need a Part

I'm converting an ETA 2846 to GMT and have all the parts except the 'intermediate datewheel gears' (I think that's what they are called). The non-GMT has a two gear 'stack', for the GMT function to work it needs a three gear 'stack'.

Does anyone have a 3 gear stack, or a movement with one I can buy? Please let me know.

It's this 3 gear stack (photo stolen from freddy)

Thanks, guys.

Been some time since I worked on an ETA, but I think someone posted that that is a standard ETA part. So you might check some of the parts sellers like julesborel to see if they have it. Otherwise, unless someone has a spare, you may need to do what I did & purchase another rep GMT to get a GMT donor ETA.

I checked the parts schematics for the ETA 2836-2. 2846 and 2893-2. All three 'intermediate datewheel gears' are the same part number, and all three are the 2 gear stack. No top gear for the gear attached to the bottom of the 24 hour pinion. I looked at the other gears, but no joy. If no one has one or a broken/non-working movement to sell, I will have to buy a new one.

Robert, I am a little bit late, lot of watches to assemble, yours need reluming as we talk and I need one or two more days, I will email you news, lot of (positive) change in my "kitchen watch plumbing statut",

Dennis, socialists/democrats in USA are not the same like in France, I really appreciate Obama for lot of reasons and hope he will be elected for a second round ,

Nicolas Sarkosy would be a democrat in USA, Hollande would be a communist, worse, a Bolchevic !

Yes, Jean, I know. I too hope for re-election. I think, without getting into a political discussion here, that the way our Nations worked together to help the Libyans liberate themselves is the way it should be. As your Nation helped mine win our Liberty. We supported their fight with air power as France supported our fight with Sea Power. The Libyan People did the boots on the ground fighting for their Liberty, not us. They will choose their new government, not us. And we must support their choice, even if it's not the government that we want.

I checked my ETA parts box, I have a lot of these 3 stack gears, I will send you 2, just in case one will fly and be lost in the carpet...

in fact this part is not an ETA part, it is a part from the 2836 series Chinese gmt conversion assembly

If you can't source one drop me a line, I may have a spare.

Since you're converting a slow-beat I assume you want a non-adjustable GMT hand? If you remove the adjusting gear (the one installed where the date flipper normally goes) and either install a non-sliding GMT wheel, or glue the two pieces of your GMT wheel together, you get a non-adjusting GMT hand that won't slip, ever.

I faced the same dilemma during Phase I construction. Ultimately, I opted to remove the quick-set date & hacking functions, so the 2846 functions just as my gen-powered '42 does. Of course, because it is such a pain-in-the-ass to set the date on a non-quick-set watch, I have to keep it on 1 of the winders. But a small price to pay for a watch that I can hand to someone (with a bit of Rolex knowledge) that wants to see how it works ;) .

On a similar note, for those who question the reasoning behind fitting gen movements into rep/aftermarket cases -

I recently got my money's worth when the watchmaker in an AD, after questioning the authenticity of my beater, got that deer-in-the-headlights look after opening the case. All he could say was, 'Ugh......er.....ehhhhh.................this is an old 1, isn't it? I guess I've got alot to learn.' And my female friend nailed his guilty coffin closed with, 'Yes, he's got alot of 'old 1s''. :yeah:
