Daytona build - replacing DW stock dial crown

Recommended Posts

I am planning on replacing the stock DW crown on the Daytona dial. Before I pull the trigger on a damaged dial, what should I be looking for?

Color? Silver, I guess.

Size, are they all the same?

Shape? Target is a 6263 silver dial.

Thanks

You should be able to pluck the coronet off of any dial from a dress Rolex sized 34mm and up. Possibly even smaller, but go to the AD and take a look before buying a donor dial from, say, a Ladies Datejust.

If you really want to be accurate to the Daytona, then you'll want a Singer coronet, which has a distinctive shape and a uniquely open "mouth". Unfortunately, most of the Datejust and OP dials I've seen on sale (for $100 and less) are Beyelers, which have smaller openings on their coronets. They're still improvements over DW's part, though.

I used a 5500 Air King dial when I modified my DW dial. Though it wasn't perfect, it was a big improvement over the stock coronet. Air King coronet on DW dial is the best aftermarket option you can get imo.

I cannot remember what the donor dial was, but 62xx Daytonas have a coronet that look like this

In any case, just about any gen coronet will do since very few collectors will identify the wrong (gen) coronet on an otherwise gen-looking dial.
