zaza
I just wanted to contribute with this ONE of a kind build and share it with our beautiful RWG Community. This was ATHAYA's personal 6154. The guts was originally Unitas on hard CB, but I had a vision for this piece which I then discussed with A. He welcomed the idea and together we embarked on realizing the project. First, a small historical Overview: The 6154 is an extremely rare Stainless Steel [cushion-shaped] Diver's wristwatch that was originally made for the Egyptian Navy during the rule of King Farouk of Egypt around 1954, using, as requested, the old style radioactive dials. A very small number of watches was produced without protecting device. The reference 6154 is especially known for the flat shape of its 47 mm case. Compared with references 6152 and 6152/1, the 6154 is even more elegant and almost “streamlined” which gives it a special nickname in the Vintage Panerai world: “the Maserati amongst Ferraris”. You can compare the different shapes of 6152/1, 6152 and 6154 watches in the book “Vintage Panerai – The References”, chapter II / page 174-175. The Ref. 6154 is featured in pages 184-201 of the book. A very rare Ref. 6154 fetched the remarkable auction result of 326,500 USD recently , setting a new world record for a Vintage Panerai watch: REF: LOT 268 on Christie’s Sale 2610 Important Watches (New York, December 14th, 2012). To the Breakdown: Movement – Genuine Swiss Cortebert 616 [Closest movement to the original ROLEX Cort. 618] with proper engravings on the bridge. The movement is naturally aged (from the late 50s) and is fully regulated. POWER RESERVE passed the 43 hour test when fully wound. Case set – Athaya - Attention paid to the minutest detail on every lip, corner, curve, everything. Each micron is forged according to the genuine model. The mid case is made of heavy bronze which keeps aging beautifully over time. Exhibition Caseback & Bezel are SS with proper OPB engravings. Crown – There is still a lot of room for improvement on this one. It had opted for the Bronze one, but the batch turned out to be of low quality and prone to scratches, so we agreed to use a SS one and burn it to give it a bronze look. Not the greatest result to be quite honest, I'm looking for a genuine Brevet crown. For those of you of have it, please send me a pm. Dial – The cherry on top! Hand made ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL. Aged with natural cracks, the lume is adorable. Dial flames like a torch. Hands – high tube double pencils. "Slightly" Aged. Top plexi – Q24 / Tropic 24: outside diameter is 40.1mm, Height at center is aprox. 6.2mm, height at edge is aprox. 3.4mm, thickness at lip is 1.1mm / Comparison of clarity and distortion/magnification versus Gen Trop 24 is very decent. Strap – Looks like it was stripped off an Ammo or something. I might upgrade this in the future. I'm considering a leather NATO from Gunny. Advices on hide and color are more than welcome! Not the most professional pictures I must admit, and they sure do this babe little justice, but they should tend to purpose. ENJOY
