The actual show theme was about the library at Alexandria. They went through various inventions that were 'conceived' or at least documented in the that great library. One of the items was this calculator. Apparently, it was used to calculate distances, perform trigonometric additions for architectual purposes, astronomical calculations, etc. Fascinating. It's a damn shame that Marcus Antoninus set that library ablaze to flush out Julius Ceasar.
