Mendota Explorer
I once spent a week visiting a college friend in central Norway - Steinkjer. It wasn't far enough north to technically be considered midnight sun, but hell if I could tell the difference. It never got fully dark! It set at night but remained at that dusk level (slightly darker than your pics) until it started rising again. She told me if we were farther north it wouldn't actually even set at all. It would dip down to the horizon and then come up again. Uff da, what an exhausting summer that would be...
Nanuq
Exhausting summer? Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeah!! It's time to rock-n-roll in the arctic while the sun is up! Winter is coming, we sleep then.
Mendota Explorer
Those winter months are crazy. I spent Christmas with relatives in Oslo, and it would set around 3:30ish or so and wouldn't rise until later in the morning. I can't imagine what it would be like, farther north in the Arctic Circle. You'd need special lights or something to not go crazy! Lots of time to tinker with watches, though. You'd need a GMT function to just keep track of whether it was morning or night.
Nanuq
Yeah, wild times! We're not quite that far north so the sun *does* go down in summer but it never gets dark. In the winter the opposite is true, the sun does come up but not very far above the horizon. I keep my hockey gear in the Rover in the winter, and every day I make sure I hit the neighborhood rink just before noon and get some light in my eyes. Lots of guys show up for aerobic exercize, and to keep themselves sane. On the weekends you HAVE to get out on XC skis or a mtn bike and suck up more light. There's a very real syndrome here called Cabin Fever and people get truly weird by late winter. You can tell they're the ones sitting inside by the stove.
