Building My First Sub

Hello all,

I am thinking of building my first project watch. I would love to build a sterile submariner on the cheap and learn a thing or two in the process. I have a gen GMT Master II and would love to compare the two when i finish my project on the sub. I currently am sourcing parts and would like to go with a cheap submariner case on eBay:   http://www.ebay.com/itm/40mm-submariner-watch-case-bracelet-set-for-ETA-2836-2-movement-NEW-/221552205912. I plan on using an eta 2836-2 movement that I already have from an older watch of mine. I also plan on giving it my own little spice and using these Seamaster style hands from eBay: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/SEAMASTER-300-MILSUB-SUPER-LUME-WATCH-HANDS-for-ETA-2081-2824-2836-2892-MOVEMENT-/221940288505?hash=item33acac0bf9:g:2WEAAOxyCJ9SaZVI also i plan on just getting a sterile submariner dial from eBay.

I would love some input to see if this would be a worthwhile project to take on. I am open to any suggestions. Thank you. Happy Holidays!

Definitely worth taking on if you think you'll learn something from it.

You'll have to try and find a dial that fits the case, with dial feet for a 2836:

Dial openin: 27.4mm
Maximum dial diameter: 29.5

So find a dial with those dimensions. Try looking at "helenarou," just google the name and you'll see the results. They sell branded dials, not just sterile, if you want to go with branded.

From there, look at the size of your hands and see if they will fit the dial appropriately (not reach too far onto the indices or not far enough).

Thank you very much for the input. I also imagine i will need to get movement retaining ring to fit into the case. Do you know of any good makers of these?

I actually do not know what movement ring would be best for this case in particular. You might be best off trying to source all your parts from the same person, as that way you can be a little more sure that components like movement rings and dials/movements/cases will fit together. Once again, I'd recommend helenarou for a sort of budget exploratory build like this

You could buy a sterile sub for what you pay for the case only

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Parnis-40mm-steel-Bezel-Submariner-Style-black-dial-Automatic-Mens-Watch/261862064806?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3D46c53b395d1f480baa6cb68c89444ef6%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D121454661443

Then all you'd have to do is swap in the 2836-2 and new hands. You'd have to glue the dial to the top movement ring since the dial feet for the DG2813 wouldn't work and you'd have to take them off the dial.
