If the customs form says that the watch was repaired, then provide customs with a "repair" receipt for the work that was done in the US... and your problem is solved...since you had it repaired, it stands to reason that you shipped it to the US for this repair...and you already own the watch.

If the watch was not actually "repaired", then you have a problem...

the watch was, naturally, not repaired, the comment on the package was merely meant to make custom problems easier.

any ideas to get out of this one?

Is it a brand new rep in plastic? Or used one from another member?

If it's a used one you could print the PayPal receipt (if you paid with PayPal) and show them that. $100 - $200 sounds like a reasonable price for a Breitling repairing service (for the customs people at least).

I guess it is difficult to give advice on this one without somehow braking the law in Germany -_- but an ebay bill (and maybe even one not for the watch in question) might do the trick. Be not afraid be creative.

Let me guess, he send it via EMS? I guess that happens when you dont use the search function and inform yourself. I have warned german members many times about NOT ORDERING STUFF VIA EMS FROM THE USA OR TAIWAN

They are not stupid at customs. If you want them to believe that you send the watch in the US for repair, you have to have a postal reciept AND the invoice of the repair. Still you have to pay taxes on the repair (sometimes at least) which is 19% or so.

You will definitely have to open the watch infront of them. And if you dont have a proper invoice, they WILL confiscate it AND prosecute you for importation of fake goods. They HAVE to do this once you OPEN the package. If you keep it closed and tell them to return it to the sender, nothing will happen.

Germans are tough with legal business. Don't they have some law whereby cars older than a certain model year, fairly new mind you, are illegal to drive regardless of their condition?

Either way, I really liked the idea of saying that your friend repaired it for free because he is your friend :)

Don't fake receipts though... bad idea.

ok, went to customs and they were really nice about the whole thing, i told them i bought the watch in australia and a friend of mine took it to the US to have it repaired as his dad was a watchmaker. my passport proved the story to a certain extent, then off i went!

The lady took a very close look at it, said : "Well, its definetely real" and let me go with it.

thank you all for the advice, I will EVER have anyone use EMS, as yes, thats what it was sent with!

all the best,

Robbie
