AMK000 Posted January 10, 2007 Report Share Posted January 10, 2007 Just curiosity on an old issue. Usually we see a new watch model or an improved version of an existing one, once a month. In 90% of the cases the first and second version of it are full of flaws. Even though its not the rule, normally they start improving from the 3rd version and on (if they ever get that far ... based on popularity). So the question is: How long you wait before you buy a new model that comes out ??? Personally I believe that it could depend on many factors, such as: - How bad you want the watch - How good are the first versions of it - How implulsive you are with buying watches - How new you are in the rep watches world - How perfect you want your watch - ...... more ?? I personally want my watches at least 95% perfect ... so that normally brings me down to a 6 - 12 months waiting before I buy the watch. As an example: I haven't got the PO even though I like it a lot... I will wait few more months to see if a better version comes out (even though the current/latest one is pretty good). As all we know, buying watches early, could either mean ending up with a "non so good version" or loosing money by selling it. I am asking this question cause very soon we will see a lots of AP ROOs, IWC Pilots, Breitlings etc.... So ..... statistically, whats your average waiting time before you buy a new watch model ???? section8 Posted January 10, 2007 Report Share Posted January 10, 2007 I haven't been around the rep scene long enough to have seen many new releases, but I was thinking about this the other day with the upcoming Chopard Mille Miglia. However I'm on the bandwagon for Anugus' Chronomat already! i usually wait a month or two when the price comes down. sometimes i dont though! I almost bought one, until I read that there is another being released with AR and a rubber strap 'casino royal' edition? jkerouac Posted January 10, 2007 Report Share Posted January 10, 2007 I have purchased a few reps when they first came out -- Ingy, Pam 192, Santos 100, and PO come to mind. The first two were as good as they needed to be right off the bat, in my opinion, and remain two of my very favorite watches. The latter two were good first generation watches, but the versions of these watches that dealers are offering have improved considerably over time. In fairness, the latter two were at least half the price of the first two, so the quality is perhaps in line with "wtf" purchases. In general, though, even if the quality is 90-95% from the start, I think it is good to wait for a number of reasons: Prices typically come down Issues that escaped notice the first time around are fixed But most important, it gives you time to decide whether you really want that watch. There are watches that I practically dreamt about six or nine months ago that aren't even on my list any more. Sometimes you just get caught up in the excitement that surrounds a fantastic new model. That doesn't necessarily make it a must have, especially if you believe in wearing the watches that you own as opposed to simply keeping them in a display box or drawer. Having said all that, you'll have to excuse me now while I spend some more time deliberating whether to get in on the PT Evolution frenzy... cskent69 Posted January 11, 2007 Report Share Posted January 11, 2007 With my experience with the PAM 063 2892 - i am always worried about missing out on something that might end up worse later or be discontinued. So if it is good enough or has a path to becoming a pretty good rep through mods - I am willing to jump on it when it gets to the dealer i want. For instance, i bought the Omega SMP Chrono right out of the gate. The datewheel and insert alighment issues were fixable. Of course - the main point is that I have to love the watch. I now think about what I would want as a permanent part of my collection before I buy. With the good information that the dealers are providing us with I already have 3-4 holy grails that I will buy as soon as they come out - AP ROO with correct subdials, Northpole GMT final version, 7753 187 (if it ever comes out). JJFlash Posted January 11, 2007 Report Share Posted January 11, 2007 Watch movement plays a big role for me. A good ETA like a 2836 inspires engine confidence for me in a new piece. Asian 7750 in other than stock subdials makes me hesitate considerably. After weighing in on the movement then I judge for the cosmetic looks.
