hello,

i wanted to know what is the best way to age a dial, without adding any lume or paint. i heard that some used a candle or cigarette. does this work? maybe someone could post a guidance...

best wishes

I've tried everything from soaking a dial in red wine to using wood stain. The problem I found is that I could use the exact same procedure and actually get different results on two different dials. The whole thing is very unpredictable.

... yes, that´s true that time is the best way... but i don´t want to paint the markers as on edges post. i don´t know if a cigarette or candle can help to age the dial?

....the link from jonthebhoy is good....but you have to use paint!

If you just want to age the lume...try this:

Get a 80 WATT lamp used for a reptiles terrarium (pet shops sell those) with high UV portion.....get the dial out and place it under the lamp (about 10-15cm away)...be cautious with the lamp, it´s getting really hot and you have to use a bulp holder made of ceramic (NOOOO plastic!)....after 10-15 hours you should see the lume getting dark.....and take care to look after that dial every 1/2 hour.....to avoid going too far B)

This process will turn your dial vintage.....but also the lume will suffer....so I like the idea of a good vintage repaint way better :D ......if you use a sandwich dial (e.g. a panny-dial) it is much easier to paint....and in addition try some fingernail varnish, let it dry half way and then press on the upper part of the sandwich dial...this will make the numbers and indezees 3-D look-alike.

hello,

@pam1a

thanks for the hint with the lamp. the sandwich dial are much easier to vintagise and it is very easy to super lume them.

could you post some pics of your vintage pam that you got in your avatar?

best wishes
