Valjoux72 engraved "Rolex" Aftermarket bridges

Recommended Posts

Ok guys, i know that almost everyone of you currently working on a 6263 project are thinkng the same thing as me.... These bridges have been sold on ebay for a ridiculous amount of money. Now i guess most of you know where to get this little part for the right price. I am on the lookout for a nice bridge and our "friend" showed me some pictures of this item for the right price. What do you guys think of the accuracy of the item? have you noticed any obvious flaws?

If the bridge really appears as it does in the pictures that I've seen, then it's the wrong shape for the VJ72. You won't be fooling anyone...it might even look silly.

Compare what you've seen with this picture:

...Now, keep in mind that the bridge in the picture above is a fake, which most Daytona connoisseurs could pick out immediately. To see why, check this link:

Hey, let's face it, we're not going to get this stuff perfect! Look at the fine regulator on the balance wheel and it's different too. Is that the Microstella screw? Anyway, we all know that Rolex made improvements to the Valjoux 72 movement that we're probably not going to be able to replicate, but we can get close. And how many people really know what a Breuget coil or a Microstella balance are? Heck, I don't even know what they are! I just read about them in Antiquorum"s auction catalog!

Besides, any non-rolex v72 will still be better than the mystery movement in the DW or the asian 7750 in the EE. What's someone going to do, insist on seeing the movement of your uber-rare "$15k" 6263? When mine is done, I'll just be happy to know that I have an externally very accurate rep using a reliable, serviceable movement.

Of course, I still want the dumb bridge. :whistling:

Nobody is arguing about the DW vs. the VJ, nor the improvements that Rolex made to the Valjoux...All I'm saying is that, if you try to put this:

36575-39187.jpg\

(picture borrowed from eBay)

on your VJ72 movement, this might happen:

- It won't look as good as the bridge that the movement came with

- It won't look like it was meant to fit on the movement

- It won't look any more like a Rolex movement

- It may screw up the performance of the Valjoux (ask The Zigmeister how well aligned those bridge jewels are)

...If you do go ahead and put one of these on your VJ72 movement, please post a picture...I'd love to be proven wrong here.

I'm with you guys...I want nice bridges for my two VJ's. In fact, I'd be really happy with a couple like in my first picture above (These bridges are really just foil stickers on the OEM bridge). These show up on the bay every once in a while...always selling for ~$500....we just need to tap into that source...Wouldn't it be nice to get a supply of those engraved foils?

...I know you were probably looking for a little more progress than this...but I'm completely compulsive about these things... So, all in due time.

Thanks very much.

However, I think you guys are assuming I've replaced the bridges on those movements...I haven't. They still say "Wakmann" and "Wittnauer"...but they are very well-made, and nicely shaped. That's why I don't want to replace them with anything that not just right.

Doesn't matter if it says casio, getting a VJ72 is hard enough, but to get 2........well that's kinda amazing!

Getting 2 V72's is easy if you are prepared to pay the stupid prices they go for. Just buy a watch off Ebay with one in and take it out. It's easy. But be prepared to pay those crazzzzzzzzzzzy prices.

And who are you really kidding? A Daytona expert will spot the fake a mile off as it's not just the bridge that makes the movement.

An expert would spot just about any of our reps from a mile off. Its just a hobby we all share and enjoy. :thumbsupsmileyanim:

No I disagree with you there. Modded MBW's especially vintage ones particularly with an OEM dial are virtually impossible to tell from the real deal if done properly. Unless.....you take off the back or handle the watch. On the wrist its really difficult. But why go to the trouble of repping something that can't be seen? Go that far and you may as well fit a gen movement or buy a gen watch and be done with it.

The whole point is that you can build a 6263/5 for say $1000-1500 w/ a v72 inside and maybe the Rolex bridge, too. I doubt you could find a gen 6263/5 for less than $10K and a good one is going to run $15-20K and up, up, up! The price differential is pretty high between a good rep and the gen these days.

I qualified with "just about" specifically for the MBW vintages or some others... that definitely wasn't a universal statement if you re-read it. :thumbsupsmileyanim:

...Anyway...That statement doesn't really apply to these Daytona frankens either. They are virtually indistinguishable from the exterior. Many of us just enjoy the game of making these reps as close to original as possible. That's the reason some of us are going with VJ72 movements. Except for some cosmetic differences, these are the same movements that Rolex used...same function, same accuracy, reliability, repairability, everything. An accurate bridge is just a step in that direction.

These frankens may not fool anybody (hopefully, that 's not the intention of anyone here), but there is an active market for them. Virtually every vintage Daytona that sells on eBay for less than $15,000 has been pieced together...The buyers know this too...or they would expect to pay the market value of $25,000-$35,000 (and up for 6239/6241's).
