Dominican Republic - Punta Cana (traveltips)

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I thought about going to Punta Cana for a few days in September. Can anyone here first tell me, if its all messed up because of hurricane Dean, or was Punta Cana not really affected? I dont wanna arrive there and sit in the middle of a huge mess!

Yes, I know its dangerous, I've been in the Dominican Republic before... people guarding stores with AKs and Shotguns etc. I think I'll be fine with that!

Can anyone reccomend a nice (private/paid) beach close to Punta Cana (I know the public beaches are a MESS most of the time)? Is there a lot of rain in September? What is a MUST DO there? Any good restaurants? Hotels you can recommend?

Since you're in the neighborhood, why not just go to Cuba: better rum, better cigars, better atmosphere.

Plus, and if you stay away from the tourist stuff, you'll be helping out those poor bastards (the people, not the government) with your Euros...

Yeah, I know all about Cuba, I would love to go there again, but I'm not travelling alone. Jamaika is nice aswell, my personal favorite would be Barbados (never been there, heared only good things about it).

But right now we are talkin about Punta Cana and not Cuba ;)

I have two friends that just spent a week in Punta Cana, I see what they have to say today. I've been there twice and really liked it, but I spend all my time at an "all inclusive" resort drinking and walking the beaches, so never did too much beyond the resort. I'm always the only person on the beach with a watch, so about ten times a day people ask what time is it?

Look up Virgin Gorda. Quiet, removed and beautiful. Hard place to get to, but worth it. Also, check out "The Baths" on Virgin Gorda. Totally beautiful. During the last ice age bolders from Western North Carolina were picked up by the ice movement and planted off the shore of Virgin Gorda. Fascinating place. But, it depends on what you want. Tim

Thanks, that would be great!

Were the beaches as nice as shown on the pictures? Clean water? Is it good for diving?

I will most likely be staying all-inclusive aswell. Even though I dont like it, because the food quality is almost ALWAYS low if you book all inclusive and dont have

You mean it was a "watches optional" resort?! :o

of course, tops are optional, in fact, I remember one lady that, while laying in the sun, would only wear a strategically place feather! I'm still not sure how that thing stayed in place....

beautifull beaches ! iv stayed at breezes punta cana beach resort , beach front hotel ! awsome blue beaches friendly people , the food was ok ( stayaway from the buffets ! its all inclusive resort all you can eat & drink .

lots of euro & canadians there . the beaches are topless ;) ..

basicaly if you want a beach vacation go for it , everything is dirt cheap there.. & the resorts are 5star .

one tip if you go to punta cana & are not happy with your room , you can grease palms there for about $50 - $60 & they will upgrade you to a water view room ! ;) it happened to me ..

it is a very poor country & depend lots on tourism ..

not much to do outside of the resorts ( i wont recoment to venture outside your resort ) ..

any you need more info just let me know .. oh it helps if you can speak a lol spanish ..

safer vacation spots bermuda , st . marteen etc .. but punta cana is the cheapest buy far & there resorts are 5star ..

enjoy .

tip : stayaway from the buffets if you want decent quality food you must make reservations to eat at the hotels resourants , what i did is went to all the hotels resourants & spoke to the reservationist & greased them about $20 & i didnt have to stand in line daily to make reservations to eat for the whole weEk man ! ;) the US dollar rules there .

this is one of the best resorts on punta cana .

punta cana 5 strar hotel

Just talk with a couple that had their whole extended family there for a week, they just missed the storm and got out on friday. They had nothing but great things to say about the beaches and the diving was supposed to be great. Besides people pushing some version of Dominican viagra on them all the time, everything was great.

Yeah, I noticed it last night and thought I would be clever and reply to each of his posts with one word that would would line up on the feed to form a complete sentence vertically. It got a little complicated when I realized I had to do it in reverse order for the feed. So I sh!t canned the idea! But I did alert MOB that we have a potential scammer running up his post count.
