This one looks to be the best he's selling (here) "18K Gold Thick Plated (5 mils)" in others (here). What do you think? I'm just thinking in buying a good TT Rolex rep for my father. Guest Carl Posted October 1, 2007 Report Share Posted October 1, 2007 It's all just a crapshoot when it comes to "gold". If you want gold, then you need to choose your dealer, and then your watch. There are many horror stories about gold watches, but in my experience, if you get it from a dealer well known here, it it is not a problem. Bezel and crown are likely to hold up ok, but the bracelet takes the wear and tear. If it has an ss clasp, that would help- some of the older ones do- like a TT jubilee and even the vintage submariner oyster bracelets. But gold plate will wear thru if worn every day. And buying real gold bracelet can run $300-400. I have a TT frankenjust that I wear on a leather strap just because I've never found a good rep TT bracelet that I was happy with. And no matter how good the plate or "wrap" or even "fill", it's gonna wear off eventually, making it an obvious rep, unless it's an old "Golden Egg". Logan Posted October 1, 2007 Report Share Posted October 1, 2007 wrapped and filled.. is all nonsense, there is electroplated and "solid 14ct" which is probably 9ct really, and thats all. remember these are replicas, and basic economics means that the less gold they use the more money they make. And its not like the manufacturers provide a return or warranty service. If you're buying for a collection then plated is fine as you probably won't wear it enough to damage the plating, but as a gift for someone who's going to wear it full time you're far safer to go stainless steel.
