How is the quality of the gold on Rolex reps?

"14K Wrapped gold" in some of the Andrew's subs. This one looks to be the best he's selling (here)

"18K Gold Thick Plated (5 mils)" in others (here).

What do you think?

I'm just thinking in buying a good TT Rolex rep for my father. What do you recommend me? How is the gold in the Paso's MBWs?

Thanks for your help.

It's all just a crapshoot when it comes to "gold".

If you want gold, then you need to choose your dealer, and then your watch.

There are many horror stories about gold watches, but in my experience, if you get it from a dealer well known here, it it is not a problem.

If you are a rep collector, you will probably be onto your next rep before the gold wears through.

I have a TT daytona from andrew that is 14k wrapped and its beautiful...I'm not sure if its the same bracelet that comes with the sub...Its a couple extra bucks for the 14k wrap opposed to the plated gold but well worth the extra 20 bucks IMO

You biggest exposure on a TT Rolex rep will be the bracelet. Bezel and crown are likely to hold up ok, but the bracelet takes the wear and tear. If it has an ss clasp, that would help- some of the older ones do- like a TT jubilee and even the vintage submariner oyster bracelets. But gold plate will wear thru if worn every day. And buying real gold bracelet can run $300-400.

I have a TT frankenjust that I wear on a leather strap just because I've never found a good rep TT bracelet that I was happy with.

Actually, depending on the size of your wrist, and how active you are, the crown can get a LOT of wear, ...

And no matter how good the plate or "wrap" or even "fill", it's gonna wear off eventually, making it an obvious rep, unless it's an old "Golden Egg".

I would stick to SS, unless you know how to plate metal yourself.

wrapped and filled.. is all nonsense, there is electroplated and "solid 14ct" which is probably 9ct really, and thats all.

remember these are replicas, and basic economics means that the less gold they use the more money they make. And its not like the manufacturers provide a return or warranty service.

If you're buying for a collection then plated is fine as you probably won't wear it enough to damage the plating, but as a gift for someone who's going to wear it full time you're far safer to go stainless steel.
