Guest carlsbadrolex Posted July 6, 2008 Report Share Posted July 6, 2008 I stopped by a hole in the wall watch shop this evening and found 4 brand new Steinhart GMT watches with the much sought after 2893-2 GMT movements. I understand that this is a true GMT movement (although it is still a 2892-2 with additional gears to make it a GMT), and that it is known as a reliable movement. But it would make my Swiss CHS GMT IIc a Swiss TRUE GMT ICHS. Since my watch is running so well, is it worth it to turn it into an ICHS? Or leave it alone? I can get the Steinharts for $300 each... Which seems like a deal to me considering they attempted to convince me they were originally $1k watches. I see them on Ebay for around $400-$500. Just curious as to if anyone would do this. Logan Posted July 6, 2008 Report Share Posted July 6, 2008 I'd have a 2893 instead of a dodgy modified chinese made "eta" any day.. no question. Interesting point too.. I used to have a genuine GMT master 2, and a rep of the same model. A favorite trick was to hand both to people and ask then to pick the difference. People picked correctly about 60% of the time for various reasons. No-one ever noticed the hand stack.. not ever, not even so called rolex "experts" If I were you I'd be grabbing those watches right away, and store them a while, the value of genuine 2893 movements is only going one way. I have replaced many 2836-2 GMT's with the 2893-2, the only big issue is the GMT hand is not the same size, the rest of it is fairly straight forward and needs little modification to work. I hadnt even thought about the GMT hand not actually fitting, and the GMT hand on the watch is the standard red GMT hand. Because the watch is basically a Rolex GMT hommage, the handset would be fine for the GMT's and Explorers. They are closed today, but I will go back over tomorrow and take another look and maybe come home with a couple. I picked one up for just a little over 300 about 4 months ago to tuck away for an 063 project. It would probably be worth trying to grab all four. Because the watch is basically a Rolex GMT hommage, the handset would be fine for the GMT's and Explorers.
