SRSD Opinions?

I just received a SRSD from Chris. Problem is I ordered a MBK DRSD. I've attached some pictures, and would like to confirm wether or not the pictured watch is a MBK SRSD. Chris's site doesn't list a SRSD as an MBK option. Please see the attached pictures and offer your opinions. BTW, I have emailed Chris explaining the mixup, but haven't received a response from him yet.

Thanks.

Looks like an MBK to me. Unfortunately, the MBK SRSD's are not very close to their gen counterpart; the early 1665's (including and specfically speaking on the SRSD) had some very specific details that keep them easily identified if you know what to look for:

-DATE printed on the Oyster Perpetual specific to the SRSD

-Thin case

-Some do and some don't have the HEV

-Caseback engravings are completely different for the SRSD

Probably best to see if Chris will sort you out for the DRSD...

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

R

I would need pics of the watch without the bezel on, and the case markings under the bracelet as well as the inside of the case...

But Im going to step out on a plank and say I dont think it is correct.

You know, Chris is a good guy, but the same thing happened to me. He would have had me send it back for exchange, but I just kept it. I just don't care how close this one is to gen. enough to deal with the customs hassle. He has to do something about his eu forwarder, though...

I'm not really crazy about the idea of sending it back either, but I paid a premium for a MBK watch. Did Chris offer you any kind of partial refund?

Hard to be sure with your dark pics & I have never seen a MBW SRSD, but it does not look like an MBW/MBK. That is not to say it is a bad watch or will not accept gen parts (check with Euro on that), but the dial & case do not look like they are MBW.

There are indeed MBK/MBW SRSD's. I've seen and handled quite a few.

BTW, best way to confirm is to pop the bezel off to expose the retaining ring underneath. Very easy to do; for a damage free method, use a credit or debit card to wedge between the bezel and case and give it a slight twist. Should pop right off. Be sure not to lose the bezel washer. Once the bezel assembly is confirmed, you can place the washer back on the retaining ring and snap the bezel back on with your thumbs. Very simple procedure.

The bezel assembly should look like this, BTW (if it's an MBW):

Ubi said how to check if it's an MBK.

I don't see why Chris wouldn't have send an MBK by the way.

The single red was never sold on the market.

So the chances to see one around are close to zero.

Having said that I have one myself as it's fun to have the three of them (Single red, double red, great white).

For the single red your case back should be like one of these ones.

GENUINE

And to push you to keep the watch here is how it can come out once heavily modified :)

I'm almost 100% sure that Chris has send you a MBW/MBK watch.

If you want a DRSD maybe the best option is to ask for a DRSD dail and get it installed.

If you ask Chris if he wants take the watch back with a refund he will most likely honour your request if you ask me.

Stephane-

The SRSD's originally came fitted with a caseback like this:

SRSD.jpg

The one in your pic is likely to be a service replacement, as most SRSD's were converted to DRSD's as part of their R&D process...

:)

P.S. @tr4- There is another way to I.D. this watch as an MBW, and that's to look at the engravings between the lugs at 12:00 and 6:00. I believe there are only a few different serials out there for the MBW; it should be possible to discern the origin of your's based on this characteristic as well.

Oh, yes. That case back must be a hell of collector's piece !!!

Imagine owning a full not serviced SR one today :Jumpy:

Thanks Ubi.

There are only a few to exist as original, that's for certain! Most are likely to be living as DRSD's, or perhaps on the bottom of an ocean floor somewhere ;)

Actually, worse than that, most of the original casebacks were removed by Rolex during normal servicing & tossed in the trash. So most have probably been quietly rusting away at the bottom of whichever public dump site 'serviced' the RSC that serviced each watch. :(

I popped the bezel off. There was no bezel washer. Just the bezel and insert. The insert seemed to be glued to the bezel, and I didn't attempt to remove it. Does the lack of a washer confirm that it is not MBK?

The SRSD's likely never saw any RSC's during the time of R&D; rather, these were sent directly back to Rolex S.A. for tear down along with diver analyisis/feedback from the individual specifically assigned to the watch for testing. Since these were prototype pieces for development, parts were exchanged regularly, and hence why original examples are so few and far between. There are a few pieces that were left untouched without updates; reason or rationale behind this is unknown.

The absence of that washer may simply be an oversight from production.

Hmmm.... I truly appreciate all the help/info (from you an others).

What is the purpose of the washer? Is it possible to obtain a replacement?

Thanks again for all the help. I realize this hobby is a crap shoot to some extent... just trying not to get banged up too badly. ;)

tr4-

The washer provides pressure and resistance to the bezel to keep it from spinning freely. The way the bezel physically functions is that to turn it or adjust it, one needs to press the bezel down against the case to rotate. The washer acts as a sort of spring to hold it in place.

Most parts suppliers should carry a washer for the 1665 and 1680/5512/5513. Should be less than $10.00, though count on it being aftermarket. Or get with Chris to see what your options are...

;)

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

R

Here are some more pictures... with the bezel removed. I tried to get the insert out/off the bezel, it it seems to be stuck pretty good. I can't image that I can remove it without damaging it.

So, what's the verdict? MBW/MBK or not? Thanks again everyone for all the help. I really appreciate it!
