Rolex GMTII C

Hello to all you expert guys from a newbie.

I am thinking of buying a rep GMTII C and I have done extensive reading in this as well as another site...!

I have seen many problems for the correct or the wrong hand stack as well as reviews like http://www.rwg.cc/members/index.php?showtopic=82501 for the overall feel of the watch.

I might be a bit strange but I dont want to buy something that will not be - at least - 99% perfect..... ;)

What do you advise me to do (go and buy a Euromarine..?) ?

Thanks and regards

Buy the GEN, that's the only model or version that doesn't have any flaw!!!! :D;)

Yep... reps are not for you. It seems to me that they all have flaws that you could never live with. Buy the gen... they're only $7000.

Thanks for the answer.... I am very honored for the fast reply from such a prominent and well known reviewer. Unfortunately my budget is less below the $7K and i am also located in EU maning that probably the price is higher...

However, my question was in particular for the ceramic that as far as i know- correct me if i am wrong- its only up for a few months now ;)

GMTIIc is one of the best. Black dial SFSO would be another... black Aquaracer Chrono... or Ebel Discovery Chrono. Lots of extremely close reps out there... but they all have at least some flaws.

It might have sounded a bit sarcastic, but it wasn't. We all basically wanted to tell you that all reps have flaws... obsessing over those small inaccuracies won't help. None of the reps are "99%". If you want perfection the only way is to buy the gen.

I know very well what are you talking about.... Just for the history to note that I got my first gen sub no date in the early 90's and since then periodically i had a few reps like gmtii as well as panerai.

I said 99% and mentioned Eumariner, just to stress that allthough (i guess both) have flows (as per the reviewers and you Euro has very few relatively to its price) , by no means i could handle (i quote from the review shortcut above) "Gen has a more defined case. Angles on the case is sharper. Lume is also matt and not shiny like the rep. GMT hand has a different green shade as well"

At least in my eyes these are more than "minor" flows... In thatextend i was asking an experts opinion.

Additionaly the price i found on a good dealer is approximately $350 (shipping included) so its not that cheap..

Euromariner is extremely close, yes. Definitely the best Sub if you don't want to do any mods. The WM9 might have a bit better specs... the crystal/rehaut combo on that is superb... but getting it to "99% shape" requires a lot of modding and money.

Good luck, and happy hunting!

Lambert - go to your local Rolex authorized dealer (AD) & try the GMTIIC on. Get familiar with how it looks & feels. Make 2 or 3 trips back if you need to. The idea is to familiarize yourself with the feel & appearance (down to small details) of the real thing. Ask the AD for a Rolex catalog (some have them, some do not). Then download as many good, clear pictures of the watch from the web that you can find. Again, the idea is to familiarize yourself with the fine details of the real thing. Then, after you know your target well, search through the collectors offerings & select the rep that contains the least objectionable errors (to you).

In the case of the GMTIIC, the rep is not 99%, but it is definitely close & I highly doubt that anyone, especially an owner of a gen, will see the differences. The problem with this rep is the unreliability of its movement -- either chs or ihs. About 50% of GMTIICs have failed since their release in July (fortunately, I have 1 of the working copies).

Thanks freddy. I have done the first steps and i believe that now is the time to decide.....! To add to what you said "especially an owner of a gen, will see the differences" even more the ones that do not have it....

Just to be clear, I said that most gen owners will NOT see the difference (between the rep & gen GMTIIC).
