hackR
got to thinking about this topic...and decided to post a reply on Francisco's original thread located here: Francisco's a7750 sunken date wheel fix: "the ring" thought i'd post this here, too -- as more folks might see it and comment... four words....precision plastic injection molding... i'm certainly not an expert in this field, but it seems to me that the metal machined ring could be used to make a form where these rings could be produced thru precision plastic injection molding...can't be much to make the mold/tool to produce this ring...and then you could simply crank them out for a very low cost...amortizing the mold/tooling cost, these could be produced rather inexpensively... amazing work to make that ring, Francisco! thoughts/comments...R
chefcook
I am working in this field in the automotive industry and IMO this would not be near profitable. First an epoxy or silicone mould is not strong enough. To produce parts with the required accuracy a steel mould is the only way as you need very high injection pressure and a very pourable material to fill the very thin ring. Most probably you would even need a hot runner nozzle. Second thing is a ring is VERY difficult to make without distortion, especially in this size. Best way to make a ring is a film gate from the top and then cut out the film. The mold including hot runner nozzle and the standard parts needed will cost you a few thousands plus you need a injection moulding machine like Babyplast with a very good temperature control... Metal is the way to go, IMO.
hackR
chef...excellent...precisely why i posted this thought... just trying to think about how we can use "the ring" in some way to produce others...cost effectively and with the right tolerences... chefcook
maybe we should concentrate on a solution that is not so fragile and easier to produce. Why not make a ring with a carrier plate included and just glue an overlay on that? IMO this should be easier to produce in metal as it is less fragile. Francisco
I have no experience on this field..so I cannot give any opinion. many people is talking about the ring.... the ring is not the problem itself. The problem is the total height of ring + DW. A cheap ring helps..but the mod of the DW is still there. Francisco
