  1. Someone here once said "a Submariner is the world's finest $500 watch". That's exactly right, in my book.

  2. How about rep parts? In some cases, genuine replacement parts are becoming impossible to find, so people produce copies. So as a matter of principle, when the gen bezel pops off your 6536 again, do you: wear it without the bezel and hate the look, or put it in a drawer and grit your teeth, or buy a good aftermarket bezel and continue enjoying the watch? You can see where my argument is going next.

  3. I'll second that, Why a Rolex needs to cost $8,000 not $1,000 is still beyond me, aside from all the money that is spent to tell everyone that the watch is worth $8,000. A Submariner would be one heck of a $1,000 watch by the way but considering they probably cost about $400 to make, I'd say we're getting hosed to the tune of an approximately 2000% mark up

  4. As has been mentioned, some people just like to add variety to their (gen) collections, without breaking the bank. I know a few people who work for watch retailers, and they aren't averse to reps (as long as there's full disclosure, of course). Many are offended because a rep dilutes the (social) value of their status symbol, and the image they feel it conveys to others. Thought I’m new to the rep game, and will likely have a few frankens in the rotation, my primary issue with reps is that unscrupulous føckholes will try to pass them off as gens - which isn't an issue with reps, per se, rather with unscrupulous føckholes. When it comes to luxury goods, status and branding is a HUGE factor, whether or not it's a conscious purchasing motivator. Also, fter seeing the quality of some reps, compared to gens, I'm looking at the Swiss watch industry in a different light.

  5. And what 'truth' would that be? Was my above answer not clear enough? What part of what I said about product appearance but refusal to pay the price tag didn't you understand? If I wanted to be wearing a Casio, I would be wearing a Casio. At the moment, I happen to want to wear a Rolex, but am not prepared to pay their inflated price tags, hence why I buy replicas. I don't try to pass them off as gen, so who am I lying to? I know they're replicas, I bought the things, so I can hardly be lying to myself... Can you buy a Ferrari for the same price? Saving money/frugality/cheapness/whatever you want to call it, it's all the same thing... Besides, only cunts drive Audis... The Submariner was released in 1954. In the time since, other than tweaking the design, Rolex has continued to make the same watch, I think it's safe to say that they've long recouped any design costs long ago... As pointed out in American Gangster, "anything else is just greed..." Reps are built from scratch, yet their prices aren't ludicrous... If they were all built from 1:1 original plans, then there wouldn't be all these different versions of the same watch released.

  6. I test drive reps to buy gens. But sometimes I go the opposite direction if the rep is that good (or good enough) I test drove APs and fell in love with a gen Panda when I tried it on. I own the gen Sea Dweller and recently acquired an Ultimate SD (check out my review). Now I want to sell my gen SD for a DSSD, after trying out a Noob DSSD. I've never bought a gen Panerai, even though I could. because the reps have always been that good.

  7. Just got one from puretime last week. The watch looks and feels great, stunning quality and feel. Of course it's not perfect, it has some issues: lume pads on 12, 3, 6, 9 are a little different colour and more block-like than gen, the date font has been updated which is not mentioned on their site - now the 7s are correct but the day font is the same as before so they don't really fit each other, also the bracelet SEL fit is bad. Other than that it's my best rep so far.

  8. I would estimate that a Submariner is $1500/movement, $1000.00/case and bracelet. Rep. Buyers are still ego maniacal assholes with huge cocks.

  13. No problemo. The last-minute call hasn't worked for people but Savi on W-C has suggested a November GTG that could work. Think we're aiming for that so look out for details, would be good to meet some fellow watch nuts! S
