  2. Hmm, I just realised that I don't really post over here a huge amount. After discovering reps in Jan '11 I migrated over to RWI where I'm now the moderator of the Rolex section (god knows why!). Anyway, I know some of you are over there as well as here but I thought I'd share the builds that I started with, and some of my recent ones as well. Hope you like them. My first ever modded watch was a Narikaa 1016 without lugholes. Broke my first 21j movement, replaced it and moved it on. Up next was my first 1680. Again, cheap build, Silix base watch. My first GMT Back to the 1680 My first No-CG build 6536 My 'Ghost' dial and bezel 1675 A sort of 6538/6200 hybrid A 6538 Uhm a bit of an experiment. Mil spec 6538 with red seconds hand an milsub caseback. And again, but a little less 'battered' Bit of an accidental dial effect. Never been able to replicate it again. A 5513 for a change A 1655, first time I'd drilled out lug holes and modified bracelets. Yuki dialed tudor snowflake Another 1680 for a customer Classic bond sub And finally a 1655 Explorer II with gen crown. And these are just the ones that I've kept listed, im sure there are another 10+ that I've done and not kept a log of.

  3. I have built a couple of Explorers using the "reasonably priced" dial from fleabay seller mahand1 and despite their flaws they made a nice looking watch. The only glaring defect (at least to my sometimes less than critical eye) was the numbers being inset a bit too much toward the dial center. I was very pleased and excited when the last dial I ordered seemed to have this issue addressed!! Here is a "Feb" dial: Here is the dial I purchased a couple of weeks ago: It's surprising what a difference a little detail like this can make! I think for the price this dial offers a great "bang-for-the-buck" and makes a credible Explorer while taking pity on your wallet.

  4. It would be nice to not have to screw with DW overlays, be able to use gen hands, etc. I could give a rats a$$ whether the "markings" would fool anybody as I don't go around showing off a watches innards to strangers or try to sell them as "real"... The last clone 3135 I inspected had stamped (as in ink or paint) markings anyway, I'd rather have a sterile one that could be properly engraved later...

  6. Wrong. Read about the research/engineering that went into development of the parachrom hairspring, ceramic bezel or any of Rolex's recent innovations. You should know, too, that most of the functions/features that make the modern wristwatch what it is today, were either developed or 1st implemented in a major way by Rolex. Contrary to popular opinion, Rolex is constantly researching new ways to make a watch better, more accurate or more reliable & that costs alot of money. And that does not even take into account all of the charities that Rolex has (often quietly) supported over the years.

  7. Was putting the watches together to see what project I could tackle next once I complete the SSDs and thought of a little group shot while I had the chance. Can't really pick a favorite yet. But I guess it is all based on what mood I am in and what I'm doing while wearing the watch. From left to right, my Monte Carlo, the 9411, 16800/610 still in progress, the SSD with emergency dial and the exotic dial 6263 wearing a Donerix custom strap. One picture, just because. E

  8. I think it is safe to say that, eventually, many of Rolex's calibers will be cloned. This will not only be a boon to franken builders, but, also, to gen owners who, because of Rolex's onerous & unaccommodating trade policies, have found it difficult (at best) to source replacement parts for their watches. Imagine being able to source new ebauches & parts for the 72B, 722, 630 or 1030gmt.

  9. Thanks guys. Just household bleach for the inserts. Apart from the Blue Tudor sub all of these builds were either sold on long ago, or were customer pieces I'm afraid.

  11. H-Factory PAM88I, the one for around $330 is the best one you can get. Pay attention to QC, make sure you get one with a quality timegrapher readout - it should really be your only concern when getting this model as it's quite accurate. It does have some small nits, and one relatively big one as they haven't managed to nail the subdial color precisely (if that bothers you opt for a PAM237H instead) but it's a very good replication overall.
