  2. God only knows how many "generations" of Planet Oceans we've got already. I already thought the 4th Generation was the last model I had to buy, but I was wrong. The rep factories have "milked" the members many times with this watch. They had to make 3-4 attempts to finally get the bigger version right. Black 45mm Planet Ocean is the watch that Daniel Craig actually wears in "Casino Royale" (before he changes to the standard "Bond Seamaster" later in the movie). He's wearing his 45mm PO with a black rubber strap. When I'm writing this review nobody has yet came out with a rep strap that goes with the "Ultimate", but I believe it's only a matter of time when they're out. Can't really think of a strap that has more sales potential. How good is it? The 4th Gen is excellent replica watch. But the "Ultimate" has finally fixed some of the minor shortcomings. Actually there was very little to fix with the 4th Gen. All the improvements belong to the detail department, but are definitely important for the accuracy freaks. 1. The bracelet: If the 4th Gen had a serious shortcoming it was definitely the questionable bracelet and clasp quality. The SEL had too big gap between the last link. Also the clasp didn't lock up properly, felt loose and left annoying gap between the bracelet and clasp. All these have been fixed and the watch sits perfectly on the wrist. The clasp also has correct markings for the 45mm version: "OMEGA Seamaster PROFESSIONAL PLANET OCEAN". 2. The hands: 4th Gen had too short hands (barely noticeable though). This flaw has been fixed for the "Ultimate". But now they introduced the wrongly shaped Omega ellipse logo. The feet are shaped a'la on the older Seamasters. Otherwise the dial is virtually perfect, and the pearl has been dramatically improved. 3. The HE valve: I never really swallowed some members' claims that the HE valve was too low on the 4th Generation. I think it was perfectly placed on the rep, because on the smaller Planet Ocean the HE was significantly lower than on the standard Seamaster line. Either way, the HE valve has been raised a bit for the "Ultimate". 4. AR Coating: 4th Gen had light AR coating, which has been improved for this model. It has similar blueish tint on the crystal as the genuine (in certain lighting), but unlike the genuine the crystal looks like it's coated only from inside. Because of this the tint isn't quite as strong. Still very impressive. 5. Luminosity: When it comes to lume the 4th Generation is still the best replica watch I've ever seen. "Ultimate" has good lume for a rep, but not quite as good as the 4th Gen (at least my rep). The pearl has weak lume on the Ultimate, while it glows like a torch in the 4th Gen. But neither can be compared to the genuine, which is especially famous of its luminous abilities. "Ultimate" lume after "charging" the dial under a lamp for 30-40 seconds: I've done so many reviews of various really impressive reps lately so it's difficult to impress me anymore. But the "Ultimate" still manages to do it. Besides the feet of the Omega logo on the dial and only one-sided AR coating it's virtually perfect (visually). I actually find it quite boring that there's nothing more to complain about this watch. It's almost like reviewing a genuine watch. You know... "it's just a Planet Ocean, you have all seen it before". What was really surprising was how HUGE this watch feels. It dwarfs the 4th Generation, which is by no means a small watch. Needless to say it makes any Rolex look like a ladies' watch. It weighs amazing 230 grams!!! This is identical with the genuine, so it's definitely not for anorectic wrists. Here you can see the comparison shot with some other famous Omega models. As you can see the 45mm Planet Ocean is humongous. Ultimate 45mm Planet Ocean is without a doubt the best ever Planet Ocean, and perhaps even the best Omega rep ever. So my Guide definitely needs updating. This is hopefully the end of the Planet Ocean saga, which continued for over a year. The "Ultimate" ranks up there with the best replicas ever. But because of its size it's not for everybody. 4th Gen is still excellent choice for people who don't want to wear huge watches. But now it's easier: buyers only need to choose between these two models. The "Ultimate" doesn't make the 4th Generation feel inferior by any means, it's only significantly better in the small details. For some, these details don't mean anything, for others they mean everything. Hopefully this review and my 4th Generation review answers all questions about the Planet Ocean reps to the newbies. When it comes to popularity the PO has become on par with Fiddy and Submariner. Perhaps recently even surpassed these two? [

  3. Thought I'd try my hand at one of these... Brief departure from the 1940's dress watches I've been working on lately This project started more as a curiosity; I was intrigued specifically by the whisperings and 'myth' of dials that were so close to gen, that they may as well be. So, my adventure initiated with a dial and hand set from cc33; great guy to work with and cannot say enough good things about him. He's truly an asset to the community and I consider him one of the great authorities on Big Crowns. He's really done a lot of research on these and it shows in his fantastic builds. The dial base is a genuine Beyeler, refinished to genuine specs in the same process that such dials were produced back in their time. The gilt fonts, chapters and index are all base metal, framed up with chocolate brown 'tropical', patina. Sealing everything in is nitrocellulose lacquer... Which provides a nice, glossy mirror-like finish. Looking at the dial at an angle, one can see that the gilt attributes are actually on a different, lower plane of the dial surface; adds a lot of character and depth to the watch. After seeing the dial up close and in my hands, I knew I had to keep going. Hands are a nice set of gilt with lollipop seconds; nice match to the markers. Had to have a small repair done on the seconds hand; the tube had separated from it completely and so I had to have a new one riveted on (but it's all set now). A project just wouldn't be a project without a few hurdles along the way; it would be a bit boring if there were no troubleshooting or problems to solve and everything just went together without any effort I love LOVE the big bubble of the lollipop seconds... Maybe one of my favorite details on this watch. Perhaps especially so, considering the effort needed to get it sorted out The insert is a near mint, pristine example of a fat font I had come across on luck. It appears to be, perhaps from a 1680/8, as the fonts are slightly beige in tone. They're a great match to the cream luminous markers on the dial. I also picked up a nice, even faded grey insert, but felt that it wasn't quite as good of a match to the overall feel of the watch. Just chucked that one back into the spares box and will maybe find a use for it someday... The movement is a clean 1030, fully overhauled by the master up North And wrapping it all up is a case from Phong, matched with a gen 800 crown that I picked up for a whopping $15. Took a bit of a risk on it as the pics were not great, but there were some small details that stood out that I felt comfortable with. That... And it was only $15! Sure, it's got some wear... A knick here and a small ding there... But for the price... I ain't complaining. As mentioned in other threads, my crown doesn't screw down completely; a common problem as many gen examples out there seem to suffer the same issue. On to some pics... Insert pairing #1 Insert pairing #2 All I really need now is to find a suitable rivet Oyster (it's on a NATO for now)... For this I can wait. Got some Pateks to start working on now... Thanks for looking! //ubi

  8. Strap just arrived for mine today from Peter, bespokely crafted in Black Croc with white stitch and only 4 holes, I could have actually just gone 1 but stopped short and just said less holes on show. New Crown set coming as usual problem of stripped thread I fear! I love this watch and just bought a 5002 sister for her. AJ

  12. There are plenty of good aftermarket mesh straps..but of course none (barring maybe one) come close to the OEM... As suggested WJean's a decent quality at reasonable price.... And another thing to consider is whether you want open or closed end and the type of clasp.. the gen comes with a seatbelt type clasp and a butterfly type clasp...I am not sure if the makers do or did a rep seatbelt style.... then gen can also have a divers extension added..like a Rolex can... Then on top of that you can get several thicknesses and 'knits' of mesh and of course finish (coloured, Matte etc).... So be careful when choosing any aftermarket mesh once you know that it is the one you like .. all I mean is that prices can vary but you also need to consider why they vary based on the variations available not just the overall quality of the steel itself and maybe just as importantly the clasp... but also the design and comfort etc You also dont need to worry about it being marked with an Omega Logo or even looking like a gen as many gen owners buy aftermarket because the price of an OEM can be very high and some others just prefer a slight variation on the look..like thickness or knit of the mesh... All I mean is concentrate more on how it will look and feel for you rather than just trying to find a gen look alike.... Aftermarket brands vary...indeed you can get other watchmakers mesh bracelets like Peter Helson's divers, Zixon etc The Buccaneer I think they call it... But options are like WJean, Staib (UTS), Jurgens... Staib are pricey but are very close to matching the quality and feel of gen... Or you can look at somewhere like 'strapcode.com' They have a good selection of the variables plus they sell end links, clasps etc so you can change or repair a bracelet you have or might pick up that has issues etc The mesh does look great on these rather than the rubber IMHO.... but it is designed as a tool watch so either work well As we are close to Xmas and New Year it might be an idea to search sales sections on gen forums, Chrono24, ChronoShop etc for some either OEM or other that are used or unwanted etc (it may just be a clasp or end link but it all helps) plus of course I can imagine many sellers (like strapcode.com) will or might offer Xmas discounts or have new year sales

  20. I refused to debate gun laws at the time of the tragic slaughter of 28 people In Connecticut last month. Most of them were children. I said that could be a discussion for another day. I won't debate this Issue today. I am a law abiding gun owner who has several guns. I strongly believe that I have the right to protect my home and the family who lives In It. I also enjoy target shooting. I suggest you watch the video and draw your own conclusion(s) Lets keep the comments civil and play nice or they will most likely lock this MF down. Right Nanuq? Mike

  21. Your local water company does not run mass spec analysis on water samples. That 1ppt is routine impurities and solids that they look at. Problem is they dont look at a broad range of chemicals/drugs present in the sewage. Good to hear you are conscious about your food sources! to Freddy: - thats great! im switching to the RO myself ,I wish i've done this earlier. Do you have a your whole house/flat on RO at the point of entry? from the article : "Troubled by drugs discovered in European waters, poisons expert and biologist Francesco Pomati set up an experiment: He exposed developing human kidney cells to a mixture of 13 drugs at levels mimicking those found in Italian rivers. There were drugs to fight high cholesterol and blood pressure, seizures and depression, pain and infection, and cancer, all in tiny amounts. The result: The pharmaceutical blend slowed cell growth by up to a third suggesting that scant amounts may exert powerful effects, said Pomati, who works at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. And while researchers do not yet understand the exact risks from decades of persistent exposure to random combinations of low levels of pharmaceuticals, recent studies — which have gone virtually unnoticed by the general public — have found alarming effects on human cells and wildlife."

  22. I switched over to filtered water (including for showering) 30 years ago as the issues relating to impurities within municipal drinking water have been known for decades. That said, I doubt there is any danger over the short term. But, long term, consuming these 'impurities' for more than 20 years is likely to have all sorts of consequences & none of them good. But since our air is similarly fouled, 1 can only do so much.
