Just finished. Probably the easiest build I have done: JMB case set ETA 2824-2 Yuki dial, lightly sprayed with matt varnish Raffles Time ETA hand set Phoenix NATO1 point

I think you shot yourself in the foot, not so much with the PP dispute (although I can understand that that may be against a forum's rules...) butwhen you looked into repair rather than return after PP said to send it back for a refund, as TB might've felt you were trying to shift the situation to 'have your cake and eat it' (although I can understand why you would prefer to keep the watch and have it repaired than send it back) I think this is just an unfortunate series of events, but you're clearly not a bad guy, and I hope the situation gets resolved for you1 point

Looking good As a possible alternative, I would suggest a Tropic-style strap... The drainage/ventilation holes make them much more comfortable than 'flat rubber', the basket-weave texture looks great, and the thickness of the sides makes them the perfect complement to a Sub case (as indeed, that was an original sale option)1 point

Here you go: I used the built in wifi in the camera, connected to my iPhone 6+ using the Fuji app, focused and adjusted the exposure all with my iPhone and the snapped the pic. Uploaded wirelessly to my phone's library and posted via tapatalk. Unedited. Not sure how practical the wireless feature is in real world use, but kinda neat it's there if I need it.1 point

According to me once you get a good rep with a good movement its quality is not dissimilar from that of an average piece from (nowadays) lesser brands such as Movado or Tissot. I expect my franken with its brand new ETA 2824-2 to run flawlessly as any other well constructed watch will do. Of course your mileage may vary but, unless your rep is a dirty 21j assembled at the crappiest chinese workshop you should be good to go for a long time. That being said TC does not run a chinese sweatshop and he is not your average watchmaker either. You will get nothing but the best from him. I would go so far as to say that the quality of his builds with their hand-picked dials, cases and movements is (much) superior to that of some pieces from the a.m. mentioned (nowadays) lesser brands. **Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated to TC and have (alas!) not been paid in TC Submariners to endorse TC and/or TC's products.1 point

In my experience, most of the trouble with replicas is with screw down crowns/case tubes and movements in general. It seems most replica case tubes and crowns are not up to everyday wear of winding/setting and many movements are not in very good condition to begin with. TC watches are fine as for case, dial, tube/crown, bracelet etc but they have Asian Eta clones and there are no replacement parts except genuine Eta if they will fit. A genuine swiss Eta can be installed in a TC watch if needed and you are set for years as long as the swiss Eta is in good condition. BK watches have a good reputation too and I believe they come with swiss Etas. I would guess that a TC, BK and quite a few others will go 20 or 25 years with good care and proper service. My oldest running watch is a Waltham pocket watch made in 1892 and my oldest running replica is a 'DJ' with an Eta 2846 that I got in the mid 1980s for $75 from a USA Today ad. Something else to consider...since genuine oem brands have cut most of the parts off to non AD shops (with rules not to sell parts but only install them on the customer's watch at Highway Robbery prices), you are really in much worse shape with a genuine watch needing a crown, crystal etc after the warranty has expired than a replica with the same ailment. Examples: I have two genuine steel TAG Heuer F1 (WA1211, WA1411) with steel bracelets and both need new black plastic bezels. Since T/H is an infamous 'No Parts For You!' company in the USA, just one bezel would cost more than I paid for both watches together and new examples are over $100 each on eBay. It's crazy, $100+ for what should be a $20 part at full retail. Catch 22...T/H will not sell the bezel without an 'inspection' leading to a $400 'overhaul' of a $50 watch. Insanity. Meanwhile another guy is selling generic sapphire crystals for them for $43, MG for $22 and bracelet 'cotter pins' at 10 for $25. The MG crystals cost $2 each, sapphire $15 each, and the pins are $3 for 10. My advice...buy a TC and don't look back.1 point

So, a little less than a week, and it's keeping rock solid time. No adjustments. Two things i don't like: 1) I'm not in love with the lume, but i never really am - perhaps i've unrealistic expectations. 2) I tend to rest my wrists on the desk as i type on my computer, and i'm at my computer all day long. the bracelet adjacent to the clasp where it rubs on the desk is scratching up as a result. again, probably not unexpected, but it is there Overall a fantastic watch, really very happy with it. The more i wear it the more i like it.1 point

If you buy a good quality watch with a good movement and have it serviced, it should last indefinetly, similar to the gen. However, if you buy at the lower end and do not service don't expect too much. My understanding of a TC Sub is that it definelty fits the first category above and so long as you look after it and have a service every year or two it will provide many years of good quality service. I have much less experience than some other members but I bought a rep 16613 (two tone submariner) back in 2004 with an Swiss Eta 2836 and it still runs great. I did have to replace the crown and tube a while back. But it basically ran trouble free for 10 years while never being serviced. I have a TC V6 but only had it since April. I would guess it will last for many years. Initially I had a bad movement but TC replaced it and the new movement works great and I am fairly confident this watch will last for many years. Really no different than building most anything.... If you were to hand-build a vintage automobile, buying parts one at a time, you would never recoup the cost in it's resale value.1 point

Quite a few detail differences between 36mm DJ and 34mm OPD: Dial and hand size. Bezel and crystal size. Crown size...DJ is 6.0mm, OPD is 5.3mm. Stem is a bit shorter on OPD. Lug spacing...20mm on DJ, 19mm on OPD. Different bracelet and hoods where they connect to the case...DJ is 20mm, OPD is 19mm. Different spring bars where bracelet attaches to the case. Same movement and case wrench size. Different case back gaskets. Edit 11-20: I saw OD vs DJ but figured the op wanted info on the OPD vs the DJ but if they want specs on a manual wind OD they can easily find them. As for sapphire on DJ and acrylic on OPD...they both come either way. Manual wind OP comes only with acrylic. I often bury myself in details while trying to help by answering questions and need to shut up.1 point

Idk.. I mean. Having a Picasso poster on my wall is a little different than having the actual painting. Watches are art you can wear IMO and a lot of people think of them that way. The type of people who spend this kind of money on a watch are the same kind of people who play baccarat at 100k a hand. They bet a 100k like I bet $10. So if you think in that range, this price to the owner is probably what a $600 TC is to is normal folk. Is it crazy? Yes. Would I do it if I had that kind of money? Damn straight. To people who have millions or even billions, buying a 600k watch is like buying a $300 wath to us. I'm sure he could do a lot of good with that money and for all we know, he donates a ton of money to charity.1 point

Amazing how the AD's worked to get around Rolex's draconian fixed prices. Most AD's wouldn't come off the MSRP a penny, but the ones who wanted your business would take a Timex in trade to get around the companies rule. "Let's see sir. that Submariner you are looking at is 750.00 USD plus tax." "Man, that's pretty steep, can you do any better than that?" "Sorry Sir I'm not allowed to discount", but we would entertain a trade in." How much would this Timex be worth in a trade" Well let's see, that one looks like it's in really nice shape, I think I can give you 100.00 USD on a trade in" Watch sold, Timex probably goes in the trash, or the salesman gives it to the stock boy, everyone is happy.1 point

I'm a new guy. This thread is an example of one reason I signed up. There are a lot of other, technical and artisan reasons to be here. But as the comments here indicate, there is a lot of professionalism even in how constructive criticism is handed out. I've seen it many places on the forum. I like that people want each other to survive. Want each other to be within the rules. And want each other to enjoy this world.1 point
